So I just found one of my barred rock hens on the floor of coop, she’s conscious and alert. She is limping and having a difficult time moving around and she had poop all over her bottom. Breathing also sounds congested. I put her down in the run and the other hens immediately starting attacking her. She’s isolated now with food and water and I’ve cleaned her bottom. Any other suggestions or ideas? I’m thinking nutri drench and epsom salt soak.

How old is she and has she laid an egg recently?
Poop pictures are helpful.
Is she eating and drinking? How does her abdomen feel? Any firmness or water balloon like swelling?

It was good to separate her.

She is a year and a half old and I’m not sure about recent eggs. Her poop was pasty and dark green, sorry I didn’t think about pictures. I did not feel any swelling in her abdomen and her crop was empty. Congested sounds with each breath.

When others start pecking and attacking a sick hen, they can be dying. Hopefully she is just sick, and can be helped with fluids, food, and isolation. Has she been low in pecking order, or possibly kept from eating and drinking? Can you clean off her vent area with a spray bottle of soapy water and some paper towel? She may be too weak or could be pushed over the edge with a soak or a bath. Look at her vent for a prolapse or maggots, since fly strike can be deadly. Has she been isolating herself, eating less, molting, or lethargic? Offer some fluids, water with a tsp of sugar per 8 ounce cupful, or electrolytes, right up to her beak. Dip her beak if she won’t drink, offer some soft cooked egg, wet mushy chicken feed. Have you seen her laying recently, or seen any soft or shell-less eggs?

Her vent is clean and no prolapse. I gave her some poultry drench via syringe and placed her in our vacant brooder. She is eating crumbles and drinking electrolyte water. I have not noticed decreased egg production. I have seen a few soft eggs lately but I was unsure which hen they were from. Her activity and eating/drinking has seemed normal up until last night when she was unable to get on the roost

Since she's not feeling well, I would suspect the soft shelled eggs are hers.

She may be having a hard time expelling a soft shelled egg or other material.

I'd start giving Calcium asap. You can find Calcium Citrate+D3 at Walmart, CVS, etc. Give her 1 tablet daily for 5-7 days, just pull down on the wattles, pop the tablet into the beak and let her swallow.

Hey everyone, I posted last week about my sick barred rock hen. Shes about a year and a half old. Last Wednesday I found her in the floor of the coop unable to walk but trying to move around. She had some tracheal tales. I brought her inside and did an Epsom salt soak and gave her a dose of PND and some scrambled egg. She has neither improved or declined. Her tracheal rales have improved but she is still lame. She is in isolation in our brooder but tries to move very little and it’s hardly eating and drinking even if we dip her beak into the electrolyte solution. At this point what do we do for her? She’s covered in green diarrhea everyday despite being cleaned up. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated!
