at a certain point they are truly in this semi-comatose state... once they sTART eating they usually "remember they are hungry and thirsty and keep going...
I too never had much luck with trying to feed by hand a broody in this state as they just freak out thinking you want to steal their eggs.
 
it would be wonderful to be able to have babie chickens for a broody hen to bring up .... or even hatch but where we live we can not keep them and i do not like selling to pet shops.

so when we move to big land we will be able to do that but not for many years. we can only have 3 hens where we live
