Hello, I am brand new on here hoping to find some help for our sick Barred Rock hen. I have had her and her sister for almost a year and we also have an Americauna rooster and hen. Everything was fine until one day I noticed the rooster chasing this hen out of the yard. She had appeared somewhat lethargic before then, but I just thought she was sunning herself. ( I know...not too bright, huh? ) Anyways, since then, we have tried everything for her. We put her on Tylan50 for 3 days *(as instructed by a website ) wormed her and have kept her warm. She has been sick for about 2 weeks now. My husband even took her deep into the woods a few days ago thinking that she was about to die ( and he thought it would be quicker for her to be eaten by a fox ) and SHE CAME BACK! I told him then that we had to keep trying. Could you please help us help her? Her only symptoms are lethargy and a pale crest. She eats and drinks fine and her poop is slightly runny. She is VERY thin now also. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks so much, feafur
I forgot to add then she quit laying and we also thought she might be egg bound, so we gave her a warm water bath for 30 minutes and nothing happened.

She came back... LOL

Have you tried vitamins? A special vitamin diet with lots of treats (yogurt, eggs, cat food) Any signs of injuries? Discharge from anywhere? Have you felt her abdomen for any stuck eggs? Crop ok (squishy?)

Hahahaha....I know, we could NOT believe she came back! hahahaha He found her resting ( she had walked a LONG ways ) at the top of the ramp....had ALMOST made it to the coop!
I felt for eggs, but there was nothing there. She does have food in her crop and it feels squishy when she does. Have not tried vitamins yet. did the amount of antiobiotics seem right to you? I can't remember your other question! hahahah I will check it and write back when I reread it! Thanks!
Oh, no signs of injury and no discharge from anywhere. Oh, when the rooster was after her, he injured her one eye. We have treated it with antibiotic salve and it looks like she has lost the sight to it, but at least she opens her eye now and it is not fluidy anymore.

I am not sure about the antibiotics I don't have any experience with Tylan but I know that it is used often so I am sure someone will come along that will no better.

I would keep her seperated from the others which I know you have been doing anyways. Keep her warm and offer her vitamins. E & B are always good ones. You can also pick up Vitamin mixes at feed stores to help restor health. Scrambled or broken up boiled eggs, plain yogurt, kitten food & tuna can be a good protein for her.

I am assuming if she was ill or showing any symptoms the rooster picked up on that and decided to try to rid of her which is kind of survival for them. He may have also decided that she didn't need to feed around the other chickens.

Keep us posted- she obviously has a will to live otherwise she would have stayed in the woods, lol

Well...she is still "hanging in there" I had thought about moving her into my grooming shop, but I have a parrot in there and I don't want HER to catch whatever it is. Still eating and drinking, but not seeming to gain any weight. On sunny days she seems more alert. I just don't get it. Weird.
