I have a 3 year old hen that has a swollen belly. About 2 weeks ago, the girls were all out on the lawn, when my husband noticed one hen straining to poop. Then something came out of her, wiggled a little and was sucked back in. One would think worms, but he said it was about 1/2 inch in diameter. grey, and came out about 3 to 4 inches. I went online, found some ideas for natural worm control, and tried that for a few days. My other hens seem fine, except egg production is poor, but they are older hens. They began to attack the sick hen, so I seperated her, and continued with a chemical dewormer. She was obviously uncomfotable. Her anus and lower belly is swollen. After a week and a half on worm medication, and seperated from the flock, she seems somwhat better. Definately better energy and not in as much pain, but she is still swollen in the anus area and still has loose bowels. Actually, I have seen very very little bowel movment, but she is still eating, so something must be passing. Could we be talking hernia? Can worms have impacted in her bowels? I have kept chickens for many years, but have never seen anything like this.
