I picked up four marans hens yesterday (about 1yr old). When I got there to pick them up she said that just that morning when she got them out of coop she had heard a rattle coming from some, and one has a 'puffy' runny eye.... I had only asked for three she gave me four and a great deal since they were not feeling the best. She though they maybe picked up a respiratory issue from stress from all the heat we have been having lately. Her hens have also had slower egg production in the high heat. She gave me some gallymycin erythromyacin (sp?) to use for seven days just in case...
One hen has a really noticable rattle in lungs occasionally, and believe has diarrhea
One has puffy, runny left eye, haven't noticed what her stools are like
The other two seem better.... they might have a very small rattle in lungs as well... I have seen normal stool in pen as well
Went to check on them again and they will kinda breathe with mouths open for a bit like panting....it is already 80 degrees here today and high is 87 today, 90 tomorrow, 95 on monday then maybe starts to taper off a bit...
They are in an area in shed away from coop that has all my chicks in it, i have been careful to make sure no contamination happens.
They seem to be eating and drinking fine. Scarffed down a treat of hard boiled eggs and yogurt this morning, Put the antibiotic in water yesterday and today... What else can I do?
I am concerned with all the reading i've done maybe it is something really bad and even if they pull out of it they could be carriers and then infect the rest of my flock.....I am really bummed, was excited to get some hens so we could maybe get a couple eggs a week until the rest of ours grew up. I drove almost 2 hours to pick them up I would hate for this to be something really bad...
What are your thoughts? Could it be that in the heat and humidity maybe mold spores or something got in lungs...
Any advice would be appreciated!!
