I picked up four marans hens yesterday (about 1yr old). When I got there to pick them up she said that just that morning when she got them out of coop she had heard a rattle coming from some, and one has a 'puffy' runny eye.... I had only asked for three she gave me four and a great deal since they were not feeling the best. She though they maybe picked up a respiratory issue from stress from all the heat we have been having lately. Her hens have also had slower egg production in the high heat. She gave me some gallymycin erythromyacin (sp?) to use for seven days just in case...

One hen has a really noticable rattle in lungs occasionally, and believe has diarrhea
One has puffy, runny left eye, haven't noticed what her stools are like
The other two seem better.... they might have a very small rattle in lungs as well... I have seen normal stool in pen as well

Went to check on them again and they will kinda breathe with mouths open for a bit like panting....it is already 80 degrees here today and high is 87 today, 90 tomorrow, 95 on monday then maybe starts to taper off a bit...

They are in an area in shed away from coop that has all my chicks in it, i have been careful to make sure no contamination happens.

They seem to be eating and drinking fine. Scarffed down a treat of hard boiled eggs and yogurt this morning, Put the antibiotic in water yesterday and today... What else can I do?

I am concerned with all the reading i've done maybe it is something really bad and even if they pull out of it they could be carriers and then infect the rest of my flock.....I am really bummed, was excited to get some hens so we could maybe get a couple eggs a week until the rest of ours grew up. I drove almost 2 hours to pick them up I would hate for this to be something really bad...
What are your thoughts? Could it be that in the heat and humidity maybe mold spores or something got in lungs...

Any advice would be appreciated!!

You can buy the tylan 50 from tractor supply and inject on the breast under the skin 1/2 CC, do for 7 day once per day,if that not help nothing can do any better .
Where you get the BCM her birds do the same thing?

She said she found one other hen in the coop that also had the 'rattle'. She is going to watch the rest of her flock and let me know what is up on her end. She has been really good with communication so far and is helping me out with advice as well. She thought it could maybe be crd and that the meds she gave me cover that... So I will do the gallimycin for 7 days and then follow that up with a week of apple cider vinegar in water.

They seem to have been eating and drinking fine today and also found 3 eggs as well (Iknow not to eat since they are on meds)

Why on earth did you bring sick chickens home? Bad, bad, bad idea. That being said. I'd suspect Infectious laryngo-tracheitis or coryza. Separate the birds far away from your other chickens/poultry and medicate. Best of luck.

Hindsight is 20/20....... I drove almost 2 hours there getting turned around a couple times, got there and she mentioned that she had heard some rattling and the eye issue and thought with the extreme heat we have been having they were stressed and came down with possible respiratory issue. This is our first time with chickens and I had not done a ton of reading up on diseases yet (I have now!)
It was also friday the 13th

My biggest concern is that it is something that if treated could clear up but lay dormant and show up later and infect other chickens down the road...
There is all sorts of info and opinions out there- some say that if the birds can't deal with it on their own to cull them- others to pump em up with antibiotics... I would truly prefer no antibiotics as we are an organic family so I am stuck as to wether to continue with antibiotic or go with acv for a while and hope that clears it up- but then there is the issue of wether or not they are still carriers of something...should we just treat with antibiotic then acv and then butcher (are they still ok to eat?) AHHH! So much for me getting a couple hens to supply us with a few eggs until our others are ready to lay!
