Hi friends,
My Mildred hasn’t been herself. Normally head hen and full of sass! Past few weeks I’ve felt she has been ever so slightly off. She still eats, drinks, free ranges for bugs and jumps on me but she has recently laid two small deflated eggs. Inside of them is egg white, no yolk but not necessarily lash material. I became most concerned 3 nights ago when she was in nesting box heavy breathing. Her poo is normal-runny (sometimes) and does have yellow in it. Not yolk but a yellow milky color. I have been giving her fish amoxicillin for 5 days now. I gave her calcium tabs for 2 days but thinking of starting those back up. Any other thoughts? I love this girl but her symptoms have be concerned! Mildred has always been a strong layer… she is a 3 year old Sex Link and usually lays daily. I don’t care about the eggs I care about her health. She has always displayed high hormone levels… rooster like qualities.. mounting other girls. I mention only because perhaps it’s all related. Should I continue with calcium and amox? I don’t have a poultry vet. I do the best I can with what I have. Here are some pics. Oh she has had a bright red warm butt area too..she has had that come and go for months.

She may be experiencing a reproductive disorder, such as salpingitis or a shell gland disorder. I would give calcium citrate 600 mg with vitamin D3 for at least a week, and continue amoxicillin for 7-10 days. Then consider some probiotics for a week afterward.

Wanted to add to this..this morning I found 2 weird egg material things under her roost. One actually resembling more of an egg.. only egg material inside. I found them in her poop from overnight. I’m thinking the calcium is pushing this out? Could she have had eggs stuck inside her? Today she is free ranging and seems fairly normal. Here is a poop of hers…I can’t think you all enough for helping Mildred! This is her this morning as well. I have noticed her breathing at night is a bit heavier than normal.

Thank you! The D3 and probiotic just human form? I can start D3 now? Any specific amount or just a human capsule?

Yes human calcium citrate with vitamin D3, although calcium carbonate is fine too. Aim for around 600 mg of calcium daily. Walmart is a good source for vitamins and calcium. Calcium aids in muscle contraction to expel the egg material. When they are passing shell-less eggs and egg material, they tend to be weak, and not feel well.

Thank you! I have 2 days left of amoxicillian which doesn’t seem be doing much :/ Do you suggest another type of antibiotic I could buy online? She continues to behave fine but her abdominal area is swollen and red. As far as calcium.. you recommend continuing? I was worrying it was causing her more issues. I’ll start that back up in hopes it pushes out that material. 🙏🏻 Would it be okay to worm her as well with Safeguard at this point? I have another girl with worms so I thought I’d treat them all? When it rains it pours… :(

If one has worms, they usually all need to be treated. So yea, I would treat her with 1/4 ml per pound given for 5 days. Shake it well. The amoxicillin can be discontinued after 10 days. What dose did you give. Most use 125-250mg twice a day for a grown hen. Calcium with D3 can be used for 7 days or as long as she is passing egg parts.
