Ii have a year old light brahma who is usually very active and friendly. 2 nights ago she slept in the nesting box, which i thought was odd. the next morning she didn't even come out of the run for their morning exercise. she stood there "falling asleep" standing up. she didn't eat a single thing and hardly drank any water. I read that the lethargy and lack of appetite may be due to lice infestation. I gave her a nice bath, as her behind was very poopy and i've heard that that can harbor mites/ lice. During this, i found she had what looked to be the membrane of an egg sticking out of her vent. I powdered her with dust (as well as her three sisters) and she at least wandered around in the afternoon and seemed to be interested in pecking, although i never saw her eat anything. i never saw her poop all day, but have figured it was due to not eating or drinking. at night (this was last night) she roosted with the other chickens. this morning she seemed to look ok. she came out of the coop and wandered slowly around with the other chickens, not really eating anything. i saw her drink a little water. this afternoon i came home and fed her a little scrambled egg, as i hadn't seen her eat anything yet. she gobbled it up. while i was holding her, i noticed what looked like a little stream of yolk dribbling out of her vent. thinking she might have something wrong with her egg process, i just gave her a nice warm bath, as i heard sometimes that can "loosen things up." i don't know what to do with her from here. she doesn't seem to be getting better and at some point, she will need to eat and at least poop. does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? please help my Lola!

It sounds like she is laying soft shelled eggs and at at least one has broken in her. She may just need more calcium. If you don't already offer oyster shell separately, I would do so. They can apparently have varying need for calcium supplement. You can also put a Tums in their water, maybe 3 times this week, as a sort of boost. It is harder for them to push a soft shelled egg out than a hard one.

Sometimes a hen has, or develops, a defective shell gland, and lays mostly or all soft shelled eggs.

They have oyster shells in the run and I have seen her nibble at those. If there is a broken egg in her is there anything I can do? Is that always fatal? There's definitely some blockage as there is stil no poop.

Thank you dawg53. I actually found your link from before and just did this! I gave her a warm Epsom bath. I felt around her vent and felt no shells. A little bit of white excretion came out whether part of an egg or waste I don't know. Then she got 3 syringes of the vinegar mixture. She's outside walking around but still won't eat and I still have seen no actual poop. Should I keep up with the bats and douche every couple hours?
