Sick Pea Chick Died - Going to Vet School For Necropsy - Will Post Results

I talked to my avian vet's office this morning (same vet I brought my Mr. Turkey to see - 1 1/2 hours away but WELL worth the trip to save my bird). His office said that I could always just bring in a poop sample and they can test it to see what is wrong with my birds and prescribe meds. And the test is only $10.00. I don't guess they would necessarily have to see the bird because the proof would be in the poo. I guess I could just tell him the symptoms. But in the event one of my birds was on their death bed, I would bring them in to see the vet.
Would they let you mail one in so you wouldn't have to drive so far? It would be interesting to see if we guessed right.

PM me the name of that vet please in case I ever need him - I don't have anybody around here who would have a clue. Guess I could call the zoo & ask their vet maybe.

I'm going to call them and ask them if I can mail it in. I will let you know what they said. I could get that out in the mail ASAP. I will PM you the info about their clinic. I am so curious to know what the poop sample will reveal.

If I could make one suggestion it would be to weigh a peachick that doesn't look right daily until you see proper weight gain. In my very limited experience with peafowl, I have found that weighing them often can help avoid costly trips to the vet. I hope she continues to get better!

Thank you for that suggestion. There must have been a reason for you to post this suggestion. Reason is because as I was feeding my pea tonight, it struck me that I may not be feeding my pea enough feed while handfeeding. Then I got paranoid. It didn't dawn on me to weigh my pea daily. This will give me an idea if she is gaining weight. Thank you for making that suggestion. I feel better now. The universe is working in my peas favor. :D

UPDATE:

Good morning everyone.

Day #2 (yesterday) - UPDATE- My pea is looking so much better. When I got home from work, she was standing up in the pet carrier. She had wasted all her water and her feed was wasted a bit. I let her out and she walked around the house. At 8:30 PM, I gave her more of the Sulmet medicated water. I hand fed her giving her cat food 30% protein and her usual crumble. I also gave her the liquid vitamins and about 10 cls of water. She walked around and appeared to be doing much better. Her poop looked VERY good. Still firm with a little yellowish green color. She found her way to the bathroom and took a liking to roosting on the toilet seat (seat cover down). So, I made her make-shift pen in the bathroom where she seemed to be most comfortable. I closed the door and called it a night.

Day #3 (this morning) - UPDATE - Woke up this morning, went to the bathroom and opened the door. She was moving around. I took her out of the bathroom and brought her in the kitchen as I prepared her food and medicated water. I was about to prepare her crumble for her pet carrier when I noticed that she walked over to the empty feed dish and started pecking. I was shocked to see that she was trying to eat. So, I hurriedly put her crumble in the feed dish. She immediately started eating. I also put her medicated water out and she began drinking as well. I left her alone in the kitchen so not to disturb her from eating and drinking and I went in the back to prepare for work. About 15 minutes later, she was walking around the kitchen. I noticed that she had a couple piles of poop. (See pic below). Her poo looked VERY good. It was solid brown. No yellowish or green color. I was so happy to see that.

I did as casportpony suggested and I weighed her. Her weight this morning was 2.40 lbs. On Sunday it was 2.47 lbs, so she lost .07 lbs. So, I have to get her back to that weight and a little more. Maybe with her eating on her own, she may gain her weight back. I then picked her up and gave her some of the medicated water and fed her the mashed cat food and crumble. She fought me a bit but that was ok because that told me that she was getting her strength back. I also gave her the liquid meds and more water. I cleaned her off and placed her in the bathroom along with her medicated water and crumble. I closed the door and said a little prayer. :fl

I hope today is a good day. Three more days to go.

I will keep everyone updated.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, suggestions and other input. Much appreciated. :)

Thank you.

If anyone has any suggestions for weight gain, please let me know. I'm tempted to give her some Ensure but I will have to research that. :)

Good to hear that she's feeling better...

When mine aren't feeling well, I offer them a 27% turkey starter mixed with warm water. They also love scrambled eggs, crickets and king meal worms.
