Sick pullet.

Sad thing is they are all still chicks like 3 -4 weeks maybe, and all sick, but are surviving so far, just only like 4 are wheezing (a bit) and all of them are sneezing, no coughing thank god.But actually last week I walked into the shed (where they are in a brooder) and it smelt like old nasty milk. Not sure what that would mean, but the smell went away after about a week of Duramycin.

So are all respiratory infections chronic? o_o and MG is the most common ? Dx

Oh and can ducks catch whatever it is too? o,.o;
Not usually. Their body temps run high and they will burn most things out of their system before it can catch hold. They can get sinus infections though.

From what I understand, yes, they are always going to be there. I hesitate to use the word chronic, because to me, that makes it sound as if they will be showing symptoms everyday of their lives.

Why sad? Are they getting better? Young, they can fight it off with the help of the antibiotic. If they were older and had never been exposed, so no immunities, they may have died. I know, lol, we all want the perfect birds but sometimes, no matter what we do, it just doesn't work out that way. Now, think of this, there are a lot of people out there who don't know about 'colds' in chickens. They just brush it off because it's just a cold, right? They could also go out and infect someone elses birds by handling them, trading their birds with someone, or selling them.

The babies seem to be getting a bit worse, they are wheezing(Sounds like congestion and a bit snotty) and sneezing constantly. But the pullets are getting better still sneezing though. Oh, I knew that chickens couldn't get colds, I actually thought that they had a cold at first then realized they got worse by the day. I worried after at least 2 days (I'm a hypochondriac hehe ^-^;) I caught it early whatever it is.

How old are the babies? Do they have a heat lamp? When birds get sick they need a little bit more heat to help them get better.

Now, to prove to you how easily this can happen....guess what just turned up at my house? Yup, MG in my chickens and either that or MS in my turkeys. My peas are not symptomatic at all but as they are in the same building as my Heritage Turkeys, they are being treated as well. I now have 63 birds on Duramycin-10, lol. Oh joy. As near as I can figure this came from a Silkie that I had purchased at a swap last Spring. Never showed any sign at all until a couple of weeks ago. She started sneezing, I thought it may have been that their house was due for cleaning and in fact she stopped sneezing as soon as it was cleaned, washed and new bedding was put in. since it had warmed up a bit at night I stopped their 100 watt bulb that I had for a heat source for them at the same time. 3 days later she was dead. I should have put her on antibiotic immediately with the first sneeze. 1 day she sneezed and 3 days later, dead. Now 2 weeks later everyone is sick with sneezing and some with gurgling. My bad...I know better.

I think the babies are at least 3-4 weeks, and they have a heat source. I guess they got a bit worse since it's actually been really cold lately, snowing at the moment(And it's spring).

And that really sucks D:

Yeah it does! the babies need to be kept at a fairly constant temp. until they get their cape feathers. These are the ones that grow out from the shoulders and help them regulate body temperature. If they are showing signs of one of the resiratory diseases, it is especially important to keep them warm. At 3-4 weeks, they don't need to be at 80 degrees but being sick 65-70, would be a really good idea. I feel for you believe me. I currently have 2 ducks and 2 chickens in my livingroom right now. Different reasons but they need more care than they can be given outside in their houses.

Is the antibiotic showing any signs of helping? Did it get better and then when the cold hit did it get worse? If this is the case I would continue with the antibiotic for the full 14 day stint and get them warmer than they are. This is one time where the cold fresh air isn't a friend. Just as in humans, a chill will allow the germs to get a better hold and be harder to kill.

Oh well they've all got their cape feathers. They've all actually been in a constant warmth, I'd bring them into the house to keep warm but my dog might try to kill them. They were actually improving before the cold got worse (like 20 degrees at night right now u.u) I hope they can get better, since they are my first chickens x3. I shall go for the full 14 days on the antibiotics. I may need to go get some Tylan soon if this doesn't work x.x

We lost one. q.q.
I am so very sorry. It's time to change the antibiotics. You've done 2 courses now and it's not getting better. Go for the Tylan 50. It's more pricey than the Duramycin, but it's the best bet now.

Tylan 50 injection

Dosage is 1/2cc injected into the breast muscle once a day for 3 days, 1/4cc for smaller birds. Inject just under the skin and alternate breasts and dont inject into the same site.
It can be given orally; 1/2cc orally once a day for 5-7 days, but no more than 7 days...1/4cc for smaller birds

I copied this from another thread for you. Tractor Supply sells the Tylan 50 as well in a small bottle.
