Sick Rhoad Island Red :(

It sounds like your hen may have mycoplasma gallisepticum (also called MG or CRD) or one of the other respiratory diseases. Some are viruses that don't respond to antibiotics, and some are bacterial or mycoplasma and may respond to them. Tylan, Gallimycin, and Tetracycline or oxytetracycline is used to treat many of these, but most are chronic, creating carriers and culling may be a choice. Here is some info about these diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

do you have other chickens and has she been around them? if it is only one i would cull her. disenfect everything wait a month and start over with a different breeder.

yes, she is in the yard with4 others and lives near them all but in the same coop at 1, the other 3 live in a separate coop but right next to each other

what's "cull"? Im really sorry what do u mean by "~~i would cull her. disenfect everything wait a month and start over with a different breeder."??????

cull is a polite way to say kill. sorry. she is contagious. you can choose to treat if you want. tylan 50 is a good medicine for this but, you should follow the all in- all out rule. a closed flock because every time you bring another chicken in it will get sick too. the ones you have now will more then likely get sick and you will be treating them all. the breeder more then likely knew this .

Unfortunately what she has the other birds will most likely get it. New birds should be quarantined from other birds. Culling is putting the bird down. There is so many different diseases. Getting birds from other people is risky. I would have also said that she should have been returned.

Time for you to get on a computer and do some google searches... Search for mycoplasma In poultry, CRD in poultry, cull and poultry, all of your answers will be there if the info above hasn't answered you questions.
