Sick rooster, please somebody help me!! (new picture added)

No, no new symptoms. We have been giving him the Duramycin with a dropper (3x yesterday and just once today so far). He feels warm to touch. He is eating bread. Poo looks normal. I took the other Japanese BTW rooster out (his brother, we think) and put him in a separate area. I left the sick rooster, Luther, in his usual area. He is just sitting around, like in the first picture I posted.

This is soooo frustrating!!!!!!! I am a nurse and am used to caring for others and KNOWING what to do. I feel so helpless with my poor rooster!!!!!! We also gave him some regular water, just 2 droppers full.

Thanks everybody for your input and prayers. I was planning on showing this gorgeous bird this fall, I hope he feels better.

If it is a lingering egg-carrying bacteria the Tylan will perk him up in 2 days. Also give some probiotics or yogurt. If more serious and no tylan he should be dead around Tuesday. Just my opinion; hard to diagnose sight unsean. If u think it is an organ infection or airsac infection/Tylan immediately upon noticing extreme behavior. Tylan is still not a guarantee some diseases are incurable. There is great diagnostics in the Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow.

I'd keep him on the Duramycin for 7-10 days. Have you ever wormed him? Where is the closest TSC, Rocky Mount? I'm in Nashville, NC.

I have never wormed him, no - but I don't notice any funny poo. Can I mix the de-wormer with the Duramycin? He does seem to be perking up a bit, he is pecking at the ground and eating bread. He's not just sitting there with his neck slumped in like yesterday and this AM.

The closest TSC is Rocky Mount or Roanoke Rapids. I remember the one in RR doesn't have Tylan because I have looked for it there before. They have very FEW antibiotics.

I think I will continue the Duramycin giving it to him myself. (he also has water with the antibiotic in his pen) Hopefully he will continue to perk up. I will purchase some Tylan to have on standby for next time. I am just a little stressed out by having to give a chicken an injection. I give people shots all the time, but a chicken - NEVER! Our chickens aren't lap chickens, so the closest I have even really gotten to one was this Japanese Bantam who is sick. My hubby caught him and held him while I gave him the medicine by mouth. His feathers are mighty thick. I guess you do what you have to though. I could always make my hubby do it!!

thanks guys, and I will have to purchase the chicken health handbook. It would be great to have available.

I put yogurt out for him, but he hasn't eaten it - that I have seen, anyway.

He sure is a pretty one. I'm glad there is some improvement this morning. Keep doing what you're doing, one thing at a time.

Yes, just keep doing antibiotic for now since his poop seems normal. After a couple weeks worm them all. Keep us posted.

I read in another post that your other roo is the dominant one & is always beating this one up. This may be your problem. The little guy may be just feeling dejected & just tired of being constantly harassed. He may have an injury that you can't see caused by this. Of course he still may have an illness.

Even if raised together, when roos mature...they need to be seperated...especially if kept in a small enclosure. If they're free ranging or the pen is huge, then it should be fine....& then there will still be periodic squabbles. I believe you have them seperated now...you may want to make this a permenant arrangement.

Just something to think about.

Yeah, I was starting to realize that myself. I think just a little part of me was hoping they could stay together and be buddies, but I see that's not gonna happen. I did separate them. Yesterday. Funny thing is though, they just keep going up and down the fence line whining to get to each other. And, just let me tell you, these birds CAN FLY! And I mean FFFFFFLLLLLLLYYYYYYYY!!! They can get where they wanna go. I separate them, they get back together. And so on. Luther (non-dominant) is my favorite, I have gotten so I really dislike Tiger (dominant). My hubby keeps telling me they are just doing what nature intended, but I don't like it at all. I have some japanese BTW chicks, and I hope to keep some girls for Luther when they get bigger. The others, and TIGER, I will be selling.

UPDATE:::
Luther is better. Thank GOD! He slept in his box by himself last night. We gave him another dose of the Duramycin before going to sleep. This AM he was up and about, eating and drinking. He has definitely perked up. And I am so grateful. This little bird is just SOOOO gorgeous and so sweet. I couldn't imagine losing him. I am still not sure what was wrong with him. Apparantly it was bacterial, since the antibiotics have been effective. I am very OCD about my chicken pens. I clean them EVERY night. They get their water and feeders washed and refilled EVERY night. I change the bedding inside (where they sleep) every week, I usually just scoop the poop up and dump every night - don't actually remove all the bedding and replace until the end of the week. Tiger didn't get sick, so I thought that to be a bit strange also. WHO KNOWS what was wrong with my poor guy. I am going to continue the antibiotics for a total of 7 days.

Thanks for all the input. I just love this site, such caring people. Nobody understands the love I have for my chickens -------------- except the ones on this site! THanks ALL!
