I have a rather feisty rooster that has developed what sounds like laryngitis. He tries to crow and only a high pitched squeal comes out. Also it seems that his comb is more of a purple that his normal red. Is there some thing that I can do? There is only one rooster and about a dozen hens. If he is sick should I separate him?

Thank you.

Imagine my surprise when iw ent out to see ym roosters and hens and my normally exuberant and LOUD rooster has laryngitis...hmmm...at first i thought he was growling at me as he was primarily breathing heavier on the inhale at night in the dark coop-I literalyl thought he was snoring. I was concerning myself with possible respiratory issues but he has no comb issues, no drainage, no drip, and he seems normal in all other aspects...including trying to crow-which is when it dawned on me-LARYNGITIS! He sounded TERRIBLE! he was hilarious-he SQUEELED! Cute! So of course I am now referencing my handy dandy resource-BYC!! And happy me to see that this is not unusual! Good thing because I think the flockw ould go into shock if their MAN was taken away even for a second-he is the Justin Beiber of my coop-the girls-essentially teenagers and not ready to breed, are gawking all over this big couchin stud....yeah, its crazy out there...these girls are hussies! Any way, glad to hear this is not a terrible ordeal! Awsome!

OKay so now I need help. My guy seems to be fine, the only thing I see that he is doing is that he sounds like darth vadar inhaling...I got a good look at him tonight, no excretions, no drainage, no real anything other than the breathing. Mereks? Laryngitis? Either way, do I separate him? The rest of the girls have been around him for days...should I just let this run its course and see what happens?

If he has a disease, then the hens will likely have it too as they have all been together.

My chickens all got infection bronchitis from wild birds coming into their run and eating their food. It was a very worrying time for me, they had no discharge, all the poop was normal, eyes ok. The only symptoms were difficulty breathing, stopped laying eggs, some were really bad and were gasping for breath, crackling sounds in their chests.

The roosters could not crow either. I was sure they were going to die.

However, ALL recovered and are now back to laying lots of eggs. There was no treatment for IB.

Please do a search for infections bronchitis in chickens, and also infectious coryza. The I C the chickens will have a really bad smell from their mouths - this disease is more serious.

Hope he will be OK>

If he has the infection bronchitis all your chickens will get it. Don't worry too much. They usually take about a week to get over it. Some will have it really mild and you can hardly notice. They will stop laying eggs for a bit, or have soft shelled eggs, but again, once recovered they will lay again.

Good news is they will be somewhat immune to that strain of the disease in the future.

How is the rooster doing now?

Good morning all!! I am glad to report that upon the morning feedings of the farm...yes, I have gone from only really being the mother of 6, and a few stragglers to a "farm"...we expand to the pig today...I have no idea how to stop this love...anyways...checking in on Hutch this morning, he is trying to crow, and sounds better...he is not breathing deep, and his mouth is closed when he breathes. He is talking to Starsky and seems to be doing much better.. Now when the girls get it, the best thing I can say to this is that well, it must be good that they are not laying yet...However should I be concerned that they are so young? The coop seems to be doing great though, and I cant complain. Thank you all for your support...information...help..

Its good that they are young. Doing my research (and observing my flock or all ages) I can say the younger ones generally don't get it as bad and they recover the fastest.

Glad you rooster is getting better.

Maybe the others will not get ill. Keep up the good work.
