Sick rooster with laryngitis

My "Lady" seems sick, and after reviewing some of these posts, it seems like her symptoms are similar. She is 6 months or so, and has been in very hot temps these several weeks (triple digit). We had our yard sprayed for mosquitoes this morning (away from her yard and house), but then this eve she began to sound like she has asthma. My husband thinks she just sounds miserable, moaning he called it. I think she sounds like she is having respiratory trouble. We have never had a chicken before this year, and are not sure if she can get sick? Or is she overheating? She is sneezing and making squeaky noises on each inhale and exhale. My husband thinks it sounds more like she has a vocal problem. She is very "talkative" normally, but this sounds weak, like she trying to tell us she feels bad. We have brought her in the house to rest from the heat. Should we start her on antibiotics? She lives alone in the coop (but she has a lot of children that play with her hourly.)

Something I was told recently is wet conditions cause fungi to grow then conditions become dry and dusty the spores can be released into the air. Bird breathes them in and the wet conditions in the lungs cause the spores to grow again. The bird starts sounding raspy, it has a fungal infection. The eyes are usually clear no Nasel drainage, just gurgly breathing. You don't want to give antibiotics for fungal lung infections it makes it worse. I would fine mist with Oxine.

Noticed my rooster having trouble crowing yesterday. He sounds like he has laryngitis also. He is making the effort and some sound comes out but it sounds as though it is from far away, very muffled and low. He seems fine and healthy in all other respects. I see no evidence of any infection in any of my flock. He is the only one that sounds odd. I am hoping he just has a little strain because he just started crowing this week. He certainly hasn't slowed down doing his other rooster duties!

That was the first symptom in my flock couple of years ago when they came down with infectious bronchitis. Rooster got it first and pretty much lost his crow and was very hoarse for a few days, he otherwise acted completely normal. At that time I didn't think much of it, then it turned into a wet cough and he started not feeling well. Took him to my avian vet, spent a wad of $$ for testing and that is how we found out what it was. He had pneumonia by then and required a lot of TLC to pull him through. They all came down with it in turn, it took 5 to 7 days for the rest of them to start showing symptoms. My vet was kind enough to give me enough antibiotic to treat them all and they all recovered and are fine to this day. The hens recovered much more quickly since we started treatment at the first sign of symptoms.

I'm certainly not saying that is what is going on with your bird, it could be anything or nothing, just keep it in mind and watch him carefully to see if there is any progression. If he worsens you need to start treatment right away as respiratory diseases kill easily. Not so much the disease itself but the secondary bacterial infections and pneumonia that set in.

Wanted to re-post and let everyone know Red is back to normal. He sounded funny for a few days or a week, but then he got better day by day. None of my other birds are sick or showed any symptoms of illness. I think he was just learning to crow and must have overdone it. Whew! I'm so glad it wasn't worse. He's back to harassing the dogs and riding my hens. Funny--he thinks they are his hens!
