Hi friends,

I have a sick rooster and I'm hoping you may have suggestions.

We noticed he didn't crow Friday morning but he seemed okay otherwise. Saturday he didn't come to the gate when I approached (which is not typical behavior) and his tail was hanging low. I decided to separate him from the flock and he did not put up a fight. After I brought him inside I noticed he was panting and holding his wings out like he was hot. It wasn't overly hot inside so I'm thinking he might have a fever. He has been very lethargic and breathing heavy since. His poop is not formed, which you can also see in the photo. He has been eating and drinking but not very consistently. I also gave him electrolytes. He hasn't been very interested in the scrambled eggs or fruit I've offered which is also odd. Not sure how to help him. Suggestions appreciated!

Oh I also forgot to mention that I am currently dealing with a rat infestation under my coop and in their run, so it's possible he might have invested feces. My guess is he has salmonella poisoning but I could be wrong. All other 10 hens are healthy and don't have any symptoms.

whenever they have yellow/green poop start giving them corid treatment for cocicodidoes (I spelled it very wrong) you can find it at your local feed store im guessing that's what it is

Handsome boy!

Any lesions or canker inside the beak?

What do you normally feed him?

Crop emptying?

I'd consider treating with an antibiotic and deworming him.

Safeguard or Valbazen for deworming.

To treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm - Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once a day for 5 days in a row.
--OR--
Valbazen dose is 0.08ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10 days.

Thanks for the reply! I'm lucky, he's a nice rooster too!

I gave him a dose of Valbazen yesterday morning. He's not eating too much which would explain being letharic. He does seem more awake today but he's still breathing heavy.

He does not have any lesions in his mouth. His crop is emptying normally. For food he gets organic 16% egg layer pellets and some scratch grains. I do supplement with fruits and veggies.

Not sure how to get my hands on antibiotics without driving him 45minuts to an avaian specialist. Any recommendations?

Thanks LandonE. I got some dewormer yesterday and started him on it. Hopefully that makes a difference!

I'm going on the assumption you won't be processing him for food, so I'd get Baytril and treat him.

IF you plan to process him for food later on, then Amoxicillin would be a better choice.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Coop doesn't have mites and vent looks normal. So that's good!

I think we are dealing with gape worm based on some of the side effects. I did the dewormer Tuesday and while he is weak, he seems to be picking up a little bit today. 🤞 Hoping some vitamins and rest are what he needs at this point.
