Sick Rooster

We've had two chickens die in the last couple months, so I think we have some kind of disease in our flock. The ones that died had gotten kind of slow and just not as peppy as normal and then they just sit and won't move and then when we drop them, they normally flap away but they just drop and fall over. And after a few days of that, they die.

We have a rooster who is just not himself. He's letting me pick him up without having to chase him all over the place and his feathers are droopy (he's a frizzle). We have him in a separate cage now. Is there anything I can do for him or the rest of the flock? We've never had problems before these last two deaths and I don't know whats going on. Any help would be awesome.

Hello! This winter, I had a similar problem. A few of my chickens became listless, and then died quickly. I discovered it was a respiratory illness.

I actually had a rooster with the same symptoms yours displays, and he became slow, and then I found him in the coop, just sort of sleeping and nodding off.....I took him into the basement, and I had to give him a very strong antibiotic with a dropper, which I did every half hour or so. The antibiotic was Tylan--a powder that you put into their drinking water. He was near death, and he came through with the medicine.

Tylan is kind of pricey, but it works. You could try that for the flock. My flock really didn't seem sick....this sort of just sneaked up on me.....I did lose one of my hens. If you can't afford the Tylan, and the rest of your flock seems healthy, maybe you should just buy some duramayacin powder, and put that in their drinking water for about 7-10 days, as a precaution. It's not as strong as Tylan, but maybe it would be strong enough to use as a precautionary drug, before they get too sick.....Just remember, you'll need the strong stuff if they display the severe symptoms.

Some people do cull when their birds become ill, because they are carriers of the respiratory illness then.

Is this the kind we need? It says for cows but we couldn't find any for chickens. How much should we put in their water? Also, where can we find duramaycin?

I'm not sure on the dosage, but I know tsc carries duramycin. Do a search on the website and it should bring up a few options. I think the dose is on the website as well. Hope this helps and your rooster is feeling better soon!!

Separate the sick ones from the flock, quickly! Get them a makeshift home. Also get some antibiotics for their water. Get to a farm store, look through the medicine, find whats made to help your illness. You might have to spoil them with food like peaches and oatmeal to get them to eat. If their poop gets green, this means their starving, try to get them to eat! Also make sure they're getting grit, and plenty of water! Also, a little sunshine never hurt.

Ok, unfortunately, our roo died.

However, we have the Tylan. Can I give it to the whole flock as a preventative? It's a liquid thing that supposed to be injected into pigs and cows. They didn't have any tylan powder for chickens. How long should I wait before eating the eggs? Is it safe to just put the tylan liquid in the water? What dosage? If I get this duramycin powder (http://www.tractorsupply.com/livest...biotics/durvet-duramycin-10-6-2-5-oz--2206034) how long should I wait before eating eggs? It says not for chickens who produce eggs for human consuption.

I wouldn't give any antibiotics to chickens that are not sick!

With the Duramycin do not use the eggs for 2 weeks after treatment as told to me by my vet. I had a rooster with a sinus infection we treated for 7 days.

Ok, so should I just wait for my chickens to show symtoms and then give them the duramycin? What should I do with the Tylan?
