Hello All,
I'm a newbie to the forum. I joined in search of information about a sick pet rooster I have. His an 8 mo. old Road Island Red.His name is Lucky. He recently became sick. Five days ago I opened the coop to let him out but instead he was sitting on the floor and when I walked in he ran out but was without balance. I left him alone for a bit and just observed him. He was attentive but his coordination was off. He now seems to have no control of his leg functions but can move his wings. His appetite is very good and drinks water. I've been washing him off as he can't move when he reliefs himself. The only disease I've read about that seems close to his symptoms is Mareks. He doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain. Any thoughts, thank you.

Any sign of injury to the leg?

There are several things that can present with those symptoms, Marek's being one of them.

Before we go there, would you be willing to try a vitamin therapy on him in case it is merely a vitamin deficiency? If so, please put him in a quarantine cage and follow the following:

.5 mls poly vi sol, without iron, per day
400 ius vitamin E twice daily...

Some feel that a small piece of Selenium per day adds in the absorption of the vitamins..that part is up to you.

If, after two weeks, you see no improvement...or he gets worse before then, I would suggest euthanizing him and having a necropsy performed. That way, you will know exactly what you are dealing with and whether, or not, it is something that will be a concern for your whole flock.

Thank you for your fast response. I'm not familiar with poly vi sol, is this something I can get at a health food store? I read about the use of Hypericum Herb and Vitamin A & E as a cure. For as long as he is attentive, eats and drinks, I plan to do what I can for him. Thanks again

I did give him a good look over for possible bite from maybe a snake or spider but see nothing. There does not appear to be any injuries plus he sleeps in the coop at night by himself, thank you.

You can get poly vi sol at any Walmart...save your money on the Hypericum..it doesn't work.

Great, always good to know what does and does not work. I did have him on a vitamin & electrolyte water solution for the first couple days but backed off, was afraid of complicating any symptoms. Thank you
