I am very new to chickens. Back in June I bought 3 baby silkies. I put them in a guinea pig cage with regular play sand on the floor.

All 3 chicks were born within the same week but one of them was much smaller than the other 2 (Raven). Around the beginning of August, I found the small chick laying on the floor of the cage flapping her wings. I thought she was just a runt and the other two bigger chicks were picking on her and maybe broke her leg. She would hold her right leg out straight and couldn't walk on it. I soon realized it was something much more serious and she wasn't getting better after weeks of special care. I came to the conclusion that she had botulism. A fellow member of a farm and garden Facebook group offered to take the chick for me since I know nothing about them. He said he would do what he could to help her.

My other 2 chicks have been growing like noisey little weeds since then and we are even putting the finishing touches on their brand new coop that my boyfriend and I have been building :0) Unfortunately, yesterday, we noticed that one of the girls (Vern) is having trouble walking on her right foot. She walks very slowly and loses her balance quite often. The first thing I thought of was my poor little Raven. I hope that the same thing isn't happening to Vern. She has been losing alot of feathers lately and has runny brownish yellow poop. She's still eating and drinking but lays around alot since walking is so difficult. I just hope that something I am doing isn't making my babies sick. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be or maybe a reference website where I can look it up? Im so worried :-(

do you maybe have a picture? it would help a lot! i would quarentine her (that's what i always suggest, it's always a good idea to quarentine a chicken that's injured/sick/lethargic. does her favored leg look different then it usually does?

It's really hard to get a good picture of a chicken lol. Her foot looks normal and I don't see any injuries but she holds it out and keeps losing her balance when she walks. I was told by the girl I bought them from to give her molasses, so I mixed some with her water this evening. Does that actually help if it is botulism? She is always laying down but I can't see her eyes to tell if they are closed. I have bags of frozen corn and berries that I have been feeding them, I'm wondering if maybe that's what caused it. I feel horrible right now and really just want to help my baby. Any advice will be appreciated.

What is Corid? Where would I find it? I hope you are wrong also but thank you for your input.

Corid is for treatment of coccidia..it is in mediated feed...but this version is stronger. It can make them weak and affects the organs. I get it at Tractor Supply. Company. Also check her hock and see if it is larger than the other. Sometimes laying a lot can irritate that joint and cause leg trouble. I've seen it in some Silkies. Mareks normally starts with the left leg....but not always... How many chickens do you have and have these always been in the house?

Where did you get your chicks from originally? Looks like Marek's to me, also. Please do some searching on here for Marek's Disease. If you have any other questions, please ask. Molasses is used for botulism but, normally, you also need some antibiotics. If you lose one, have a necropsy performed so that you will know for sure what you are dealing with. You can contact your local government extension office and they can direct you to a state facility that will do one.

Marek's can present in either leg, neck, wing or, nowhere...just depends on where the virus decides to attack first.

Sorry that your babies are so sick
