Sick Symptoms

If you really want to know, take her to a vet. A vet could do a thorough physical exam, fecal float, fecal smear, blood work, xrays, etc. That will cost you about $300. Or, you could do like many here do, rule out internal and external parasites first and do a cloacal exam to check for a stuck egg, ascites internal laying and cancer. You should also weigh her her every few days and watch for weight loss. While you're at it, weigh all of them, that way you'll know what their healthy weight is. If you've never wormed or dusted, chances are pretty good that they have parasites.

Kathy hit the nail on the head - as usual! Chickens can be difficult to figure at the best of times so the best route to take is always to rule out the most common and easily treated problems first and go from there. I've gone the route of taking a chicken to the vet, it absolutely gets very expensive very fast just because so many tests have to be done to try to figure them out. Just finding a vet who knows anything at all about poultry is a difficult thing by itself.

Also, if you decide to deworm, which is a very good idea, don't ask the employee's at Tractor Supply what to buy. They'll sell you Wazine and it's only effective on one kind of worm, chickens pick up all kinds of worms. Go with Valbazen or Safeguard like Kathy posted pic's of, very effective wormers.

Good luck with your bird, I hope you are able to figure her out.

Thank you very much. I have ordered some powder and Safeguard. Hope it works. This chicken has been like this for a while and I thought it was the cold bothering her. But now she is laying and eating and drinking, but just sleeps all day. When she is pecking around she has one eye closed. I noticed on the outside of her crop missing feathers under her beak. Perhaps it is mites. Don't know why the other four are as chipper as can be. For now I have apple cider vinegar in the water.

Hope she survives!
