Hi there everyone.. I'm very concerned about my chicken. We were letting them free-range this afternoon and my fiance saw a hawk. This chicken in particular was hiding in the bushes and we could not get her to come out. He finally just went over and got her out and put all of the chickens in the coop to keep them safe. Well, when I got home from work this evening my chicken was not looking well. She had a droopy tail, and it looks like she's leaning to one side/standing lopsided if that makes sense. Holding 1 wing higher than the other. I was checking her out and found a spot on her back near her vent that was bloody. It was also leaking some sort of yellow discharge. Now I'm not sure if maybe the hawk tried to get her but either way she does not seem well. I brought her in and cleaned up her back end and put antibiotic oitment on the area though I don't see any gaping wounds. Advice Please?? What else can I do for her.. and another thing - she is drinking a TON of water. Any experienced chicken owners with advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm really worried about my little girl! :(

The ointment is good. Keep it clean and make sure she isn't bleeding or has a large open wound that would require stitches. I would start her on some antibiotic such as Tylan 200 injection asap. If you aren't experienced with injecting them or not comfortable with it then look over the forms for and alternative oral antibiotic. Gatorade, pedilyte or poweraid to help hydrate her and get some electrolytes into her. Make sure she has access to all she will drink. If she is eating good, go ahead and scramble her an egg.
Keep her separated from the rest of the flock. Make sure she has a nice comfy and quiet place so she doesn't start stressing too.

There are far more experienced persons on here and some who will say to "cull" her but I will never let one of mine go without a fight first and making sure I've done everything I can do for them.

I hope she gets to feeling better.

She probably got stressed by the hawk. Poor thing! keep her in a quiet place, and keep the cut cleaned
