Sickly duck at local produce store...

I'm not sure what the laws are where you are... I know in the US you can't get back more than the value of the animal.

It you had a pet health guarantee then you might have a basis but beyond that? not sure it'll honestly depend on the laws, can anyone provide a free consult?

It's lovely how much you have done for him and so sad this place would allow an animal to be treated like this. I do hope the investigation yields some results and consequences for this shop.

Glad to see Whistles is doing so well! He looks like a completely different duck, and his feathers are coming in beautifully.

While you probably don't have a basis for a legal case against the store, I definitely think you should send them before and after photos as well as any written documentation from the vet that his health issues were related to the poor conditions at the store. They should be made aware of how badly they injured this duck and how much better he's gotten with some TLC (and a lot of money).

Update on this, turns out the owners of Capalaba Produce own another store called Pets Galore in a town about a two hour drive away. A group on Facebook that's over 1,300 people strong just got in contact with me after discovering Whistles' page and that he was from Capalaba Produce, they've been campaigning against this other store - getting into the local papers and everything. I'm stunned. They've even got over 1,700 signatures on their petition to stop them from selling companion animals: https://www.change.org/petitions/to...of-companion-animals-at-pets-galore-toowoomba

I've got in touch with a couple of animal lawyers, we're just waiting for the next pay day until we can organise a consult to see what we can do. Capalaba Produce did in fact have a sign up that stated all animals sold were healthy, so I'm sure we can use that against them. But I think we can make an even stronger case now that we've found out about their sister store. I'll let you know how that goes, but pay is only monthly so it'll be a couple of weeks yet.

Whistles still has a few more days of medicine to go, but he's walking around willingly a little bit more and not swaying as much when he stands. It's a slow progress, but it's progress nonetheless.

Also - Capalaba Produce have taken their Facebook page down, too many negative reviews against them, I think! The page for their other store, Pets Galore, has also been taken down.

But on a more light-hearted note, here's some new photos of Whistles!

^ His one stitch from his minor surgery. The vet said it'll disintegrate by itself.

Poor guy had such a rough start, but look at him now. what an amazing story i hope these people get shut down for good.

Good news (somewhat) from the vet!

Good news first - the medicine has done its job and his breathing has improved greatly. So after tomorrow, no more medication! The vet seems pleased with his general condition.

The bad news though, is that Whistles is basically growing too fast for his legs to be able to support him since the muscles were slightly underdeveloped for his age when we first found him and despite his age, he's ended up beginning to develop spraddle leg. The vet said that this had also been putting some extra strain on his chest and adding to his breathing difficulties. So the vet taped his legs together and immediately, his breathing improved and he made barely any wheezing sounds at all! So there was some good news within the not-so-good. He's been walking around much more since bringing him home with his legs taped together, and actually seems 'happy' to be able to stand and walk around now.

So we'll have to keep an eye on that and do that for him for the next two weeks...and then back to the vets again.

Is he on any vitamin supplements? Perhaps that can help with the leg problems?
I'm SO glad to hear about his improvement!
I agree some kind of vitamin supplement that has B3 in it[niacin] is going to help with leg strength. and over all health[ look in the poultry section at local feed store or on line]

Great news about his breathing. He has done remarkable with all the TLC and medical care he has gotten.

How much water time does he get? Swimming should strengthen his legs without putting pressure on them (in addition to vitamins).

He swims almost every morning and sometimes in the afternoon as well. We also try to walk him as much as possible.
I'll have a look into getting some niacin supplement for him though, thanks.
