Sideways toe

One of our one year old hens has a toe that has started going sideways, see pic. I also noticed the toenail is long but not sure if that's a cause or effect (chicken or egg ha). Should I trim the nail? Is the toe broken? She seems otherwise fine.

Is she limping on it? Did she get it caught in the floor boards or in some wire fencing? I would clean it up and apply some Betadine to the toe. It might be painful right now, but in a week or so you could trim 1/8 inch of the nail. Most times we don’t splint toes if they are broken, but Wyorp Rock may have other suggestions. I would try to limit the activity and prevent her from jumping up and down from a roost. You can accomplish that in a wire dog crate with food/water for a few days.

She's not lame at all, I first noticed it turned to the side a couple weeks ago. I ended up trimming it, didn't seem to bother her at all having it handled.

No idea how she could have broken it. The boards she's on in the pic are our front porch steps so not part of their enclosure. Hopefully it won't cause any long term issues for her.

It can be quite common for a toe to be crooked. It usually doesn’t affect them, and it shouldn’t have been the cause for her injury.
