I'll explain to them the issue with need for ventilation in winter that isn't right at roost level. Bringing up the point of how we don't want the inside of the coop all covered with frost might work.

There are exterior grades of plywood that would do the job, t-111 is one used as exterior siding, needs to be stained or painted like most exterior finishes. There is pressure treated plywood as well. Properly installed, these will work quite well. When building a coop, can you just use plywood for siding? I mentioned it and was told that plywood wasn't meant to be used for things like that because it will not hold up well. Is this true? Is there something that you need to treat the wood with? Would painting it first help? How does this work?
Maybe, why I want to see more pics.Would that be the spot to drill holes for cross ventilation on both sides? Can you drill holes?
Great! I might not have a spade bit but we can figure it out.Perfect pics!
So the wood between rafters appears to just be blocking, no real structural aspect.
You could drill a bunch of holes in them, might hit some nails.
I'd use a 1" spade bit, then cover with a strip of HC..
Like this but better centered top to bottom.
