This guy has been hanging out at my house for the past 3 days. My chickies can't go out for their normal free range time every day and they are starting to get mad at me.

He will sit right over my head in the trees as long as I don't have my camera. Bring it out and he goes just far enough away that I can't get and good pics of him. If he is going to terrorize us at least he could let me get some great pics!!!! I had to zoom a LONG way to get these so they aren't terrific but you can see how pretty he is. He is a BIG guy!!!!

Well, my mother has Puff the Leghorn....maybe she could run him off if I borrowed her and brough her home with me. LOL Actually, she is a little cuddle doll so I doubt it.

LOL I do not think so. That is a federal crime punishable by fines and jail. Not really worth it to her to do that.

Ya gotta admit...she is a beauty. Chicken may just be on her menu...keep your girls inside until she moves on.

I've heard hanging shiny things in the trees is supposed to help (like cd's)
When I was a kid birds kept trying to fly into my bedroom window (I had yellow flowered curtains)
We hung balls of aluminum foil up and they stopped

Yeah, they are staying in for now.

My neighbor is watching her chihuahua much more closely when he goes out to potty, too.

Even if it wasn't a federal crime there would be no shooting of this little beauty...at least nor from me. It (so can you tell, cetawin, that it is a she? I have no clue) is such a beautiful and majestic creature......just doing what a hawk does. Surely after a few days it will move on to an easier meal.

Puff the magic dragon Leghorn......ROFL too cute. I will have to ask her if she breathes fire much.

Yeah, I need to hang something around and see if it works.....and maybe tinfoil hats on the chickies????

Seriously, it could help!!! Of course they would just pick them off each other!!! LOL

That is a Peregrine Falcon. It is against the law to shoot them or any other bird of prey.

You can take and hang shiny things like aluminum pie plates in the trees, cds, shiny wind chimes, etc. You can also throw things at it as long as you don't hit it. Just aim for the tree it is sitting in.

You can also try and find a recording of another Peregrine falcon and play it. What it is doing is establishing it's territory and looking for a good nesting site that has a ready access to food. If it constantly hears another falcon's challenge it will look for it to fend it off and eventually go away.

Another thing you can do is build a hawk trap that will capture it alive and then take it someplace more suitable and release it. It is a two tiered trap, the bottom part is where you would put something live to attract it.

Unfortunately they are one of the hazards of having chickens.

Thank you FrChuckW!!! Glad to know what it is. It is so beautiful and I am really not that familiar with my birds of prey.

Honestly, I am willing to make the chickies mad until it moves on. I really am enjoying seeing it.....just hope it doesn't stay too long.

I may try the falcon recording to help encourage it.....don't want any nesting going on.
