*sigh* looking for a free chicken dinner and just won't leave!!!!

Ok, not trying to be disagreeable, but I really don’t think it’s a Peregrine, their range is expanding, but it’s not usually as inland as that yet. Also, they’re quite a bit smaller and ‘racier’ than that. They’re built for speed and kill using their momentum, usually smaller birds, pigeons and such are a favorite, but they CAN kill larger things. They’re also pretty dark, and have these big ‘chaps’ on their drumsticks. There are exceptions to all things though so I can’t say for sure!

If I had to guess, and judging from the pictures which are really good BTW luvmychicknkids, don’t apologize!, but if I had to guess I’d say it’s a Red Shouldered Hawk!

Here’s the page for that… notice the ‘light’ one part way down the page, says it’s the ‘Florida’ coloration, but I’d guess it’s not that far a trip –as the hawk flies- plus, lots of birds have gotten blown around from hurricanes and storms, and just plain funky weather lately.

I don’t think it’s a Red Tailed, cause there’s a good shot of your hawk’s backside, and her tail just doesn’t look red enough, (they usually only look red from the back, underneath they’re lighter) here’s the page for a red tailed too, just for good measure. Also, Red Tails are a little more chunky IMO, but again, it’s not easy to decide sometimes!

As far as what to do to discourage them? Heh, folks here have come up with a lot of suggestions, I like strings zig zagging over where they usually range if possible, but lots of yards are too big for that, I have lots of cover and trees to string twine from, but it sure makes mowing the lawn interesting! Most is high enough, but not all. The songbirds have it all figured out, they think it's highly amusing, and the streamers and CDs hanging here and there just make them laugh... it's the bigger birds that it worries. (I hope!)

Okay, I just came home from church and found one of these guys pictured in the top post. He had one of my hens. She has blood around one eye but seems okey. we found all but two of the hens. The hawk we saw was smaller than the chickens. I don't know if it was just a young one or if that's the adult size. There are no piles of feathers that we can see. Could they just carry off a full size hen and not leave any sign? Could the one we saw just be one who couldn't do carry out but others managed to get two? I wish I knew where the other two are.

Oh, rainbowgardens, I really hope your others are just hiding and you find them soon.

I know I would be worried sick.

Well, whatever this beauty is, I am thinking there is NO WAY it is a juvenile anything.

It may not look like it, but it is really big. Could easily carry off one of my adult hens. Not sure if it could lift my roo but he is a fatty.

I will have to go over the links and see if I can decide what it is.

Thanks, PortageGirl...but I am hoping to get some perfect shots of her.

She is so pretty I want some framable ones. As long as she is here I feel I should get something out of it.

No not a PEREGRINE better if it was as they take their prey in the air. Fastest of all birds, dives at speed of 200 miles per hour.

Nice Pics!!!

It's not a Peregrine Falcon. This is a Peregrine Falcon:
PeregrineFalconsmalls.jpg

It is beautiful though & probably migrating as I think it's migratory season in the US right now.

It's called a Cooper Hawk

i google it and that's what they say it's called..the hawk that kills chickens AKA chicken hawk

I know someone may disagree but i Google it!!! and each time it came up the pics of the hawk and people saying how the hawk has killed there hens

Before i got my Big rooster that fights the hawk off...the hawk would get about 2 sometimes 3 of my hens a year but now he doesn't have a chance with my rooster around
smile.png
but when my hens have chicks he tries to snatch up a chick every once in a while
hmm.png

but yea the Cooper Hawk seems to feed more or go after our chickens during the winter months we hardly ever see him/her during the spring or summer but as soon as my big rooster see him/her flying near by or if the rooster hears the hawk ..my rooster makes this loud sound like CAAAAAAAAAAA!!! and all the hens make a run for it to the coop
