ducks in FL are going to be killed because of overpopulation. Apparently people dumped ducks, which isn't very uncommon unfortunately

I wish someone could rescue some.

And someone needs to tell the idiots that are signing the petition that
muscovies are DOMESTICATED, not "wildlife". Geez, how stupid are people
nowadays? They don't even know the difference between a domesticated animal and
a wild one.

Uh, I don't know, the fact that they SHOULDN'T be killed. It's not like a bunch of wild ducks have overpopulated an area and are now going to die of starvation, these are domestic animals, like a cat that is feral. They don;t just slaughter cats, they try to find them homes. they give them a chance. But no, not with ducks because the aren't as common of pets.

They're obviously not going to eat them though. And I really don't want to hear how everyone kills their chickens/ducks, please.

I thought that Muscovies were wild in some areas!

This is a sad story that happens all too often due to muscovies being deemed a 'nuisance' species and not afforded any protection under the law

It must not happen TOO often if they are that overpopulated...

It is wrong, but Im not sure there is alot that we can do about it.

No... they're domestic ducks as far as I know. they've been domestic since before 1492.

It's all in how you look at it. "Wild" hogs in MO are heavily bred in with escaped "domestic" hogs. Many states have breeding populations of "wild" muscovies. Did they start from someone releasing ducks 30 years ago? Probably. But they're far removed from being domestic. There's pack of dogs and coydogs around, that while once long ago came from someone's house, are now just wild dogs that the farmers shoot. I think you'd be astounded how many feral cats get put down each year. Some states even have hunting seasons for feral cats.

They are a wild species, native to South and Central America. Like every non-native species that has been set loose and allowed to reproduce they take up the "space " of a native species. I agree it's sad they need to be killed, but what is the alternative? Allow them to continue to reproduce without any controls? they have not been here since 1492.

Its no differant than hunting season for any animals... there IS a reason for it. If they get overpopulated they suffer in many ways...theres not enough food....etc. Its sad and i dont like it..but i know there is a reason for it. Have you ever seen a starving/diseased wild animal? Its not pretty and it breaks my heart to see. I'd rather see them put down humanely than see them suffer in the future.
