Hello, I have 5 red sex links and a dark Cornish rooster. Just the other day I noticed my rooster breeding my hens. They are all the same age so does that mean my hens should start laying soon? Or do males hit sexual maturity faster than the females? Thank you in advance for all the help!

Males do mature somewhat faster than females, but not by too much. A hen will begin laying around 15 weeks (at the earliest) to over 25 weeks of age. Signs include checking out nest boxes, a brightening comb and wattles, and asking the males to breed with them. Make sure they have oyster shells available and clean nest boxes.

I hope this helps, and I hope you get eggs soon. Best of luck!

Thank you for the help. They should be 18week old the 22nd of this month and they said that's a pretty good average age for red sex links to start laying

Pullets, when getting near point of lay, begin to carry themselves a certain way that signals to a rooster that they are ready to be bred. So, yes, that is one sign your pullets will begin to lay soon.

Another one is they will show a sudden interest in messing around in the nest boxes, literally making a mess.

The other signs are they will begin to squat when you approach them from the rear or suddenly reach out and touch them on the back and their combs and wattles will turn bright red.
