Silence Is Not Golden Here

Well, that's just great! Husband and his best friend thought it was a good idea to tie up best friend's dog right by the chicken pen while the kids were swimming. Dog startled chickens, and now half of my flock has beak boo-boos. Luckily, it looks to be mostly minor chipping/bruising and no one will lose a beak, but I'm kinda pissed! Those take awhile to heal.

When chickens get there beak damaged does it heal or is it something they have to live with??? Sorry about the boo boos.
It depends. A small chip is usually nothing to worry about and eventually grows out, especially if it's closer to the tip. Deep or large cracks need to be repaired and watched, superglue works pretty well. If the damage is severe enough that a large part or all of the beak is missing, well, I personally would cull the chicken, but some people might go with a prosthesis. In the end it really depends on how it affects the chicken's ability to eat and drink.

One of my week-old chicks managed to injure its beak yesterday... not sure how. It may have poked its beak out far enough to get pecked by an older chick outside the integration pen - I did notice some seem to like sleeping with the hardware cloth as a pillow, and their beak sticking out. There was a bloody patch on the top of the beak. Brought it in, disinfected, it's not deep. Looks like it scraped the surface off. It wasn't bleeding, so I put a dab of blue dye on to cover up the red and put it back out. Chick's doing fine, though it did walk around half the day looking cross-eyed and cocking its head every which direction... As best I can tell, it was trying to look at the spot on its beak. The others took a look, lost interest with no red to peck at, and ignored it. Took a look today and it seems to be healing up just fine, no new irritation or damage.

Glad to hear the chickie is okay :)
Did you use Blue-Kote or just some dye?
