My little Light Sussex Pullet is ill and I lost a $400 rooster to disease. At least he was a mistake packaging peanut.

My older Serama boys are in juvie for the night, and may be spending a few days in isolation. They chased the smallest EE pullet, not even close to lay, into the coop and had her cornered there when I chased them off her. Guess I can't keep procrastinating on kicking some out... I was hoping to hold off until I saw what the youngest three turned out like.

Probably have to put them in the quarantine pen until they either get over their hormones, or go to new homes.

Tomorrow a friend is taking two of the older Serama boys. She was going to take whichever I decided not to keep and rehome them for me, but we had decided to postpone that. She went ahead and posted them on Craigslist, for $30 each - I'm keeping the third older boy. She got an immediate hit from someone who wants them both. So they'll be staying at her place until she meets the guy who's buying them.

Always nice to be lucky enough to find the extra roosters homes. I was lucky this year - only two roos out of eight chicks that my Bantam Cochin hatched out. They both had lovely temperaments and I was happy to find them homes.
The first hatch (from the huge pile of eggs the hen that was given to me was sitting on) was an unfortunate group of four roosters and only two hens. Three of the roosters were very aggressive early on and were dealt with accordingly. The fourth is my current roo, Marilyn Manson. A perfect gentleman.

Tons of sand dollars in my neck of the woods. Beaches of them at times where you can't even walk without stepping on them. I love finding them with their teeth intact inside. Very cool.

I'm still a bit frustrated over my first two batches of shipped eggs. Only seven Seramas hatched... and six of them cockerels. I just hope my ratio is a bit better with the mutt chicks - I have two of them pegged as probable boys currently, but it's too early for me to really be sure. And I'd really, really like to get a decent number of pullets out of the LaAmBa eggs!

I just hope my ratio is a bit better with the mutt chicks - I have two of them pegged as probable boys currently, but it's too early for me to really be sure. And I'd really, really like to get a decent number of pullets out of the LaAmBa eggs!

How many total? Also, you should call them LaBamBa chicks.

How many eggs in the current set?

Started with 30 eggs.
Culled 8 clears last night.
5 more than I'm pretty sure aren't good, but had a fraction of a doubt, so left in.
17 spiderwebs.

With the Seramas... the first batch was 18 eggs. I got 4 chicks. The cracked egg gave me the only female. The second batch was 22 eggs. I got 3 chicks, all boys. I'm pretty sure the chickens the second batch were from weren't very healthy. In retrospect, I suspect humidity was too high for those two batches of eggs. I was using a reptile incubator, and they require a very high humidity usually - so it held in moisture very, very well.

Third set of eggs were local mutts, 8 chicks out of 12 eggs. This is my fourth attempt at incubating currently.

Ouch. I'd be awfully disappointed with those numbers.
