Hi all,

Just got my very first flock of chicks and we couldn't be more excited. However, when we got them we noticed that one of our Silkie bantams wasn't walking very well. After some research I though it was spraddle leg and made a quick hobble with vet tape. It has been two days (she is about 4-5 days old now) and she still seems to be having some issues walking and standing upright. She also lays down on her side alot. I would love a second opinion about my hobble, and maybe a thought or two about her toes! Im including some photos for refrence. Any help would be very much appreciated.

She, along with all the other girls, are eating, drinking and pooping so I think everyone is doing fine otherwise.

Thanks ahead of time!

We raise and breed silkies and come upon this every so often. I think you're doing a good job! We leave the vet wrap on for an entire 24 hours, then off for about an hour, then back on for another 24 hours. Usually by then, it's fixed, but if not, repeat.

We cut our vet wrap to about 1/2" thick. I think yours looks a bit wider. Try making it a thinner one and the chick can be a little more mobile then.

We also give them B-Complex. We bought the liquid fruit flavored stuff for kids and they like it. It's 1/4 of a dropperful per chick per day. If you have the adult B-Complex pills, you can grind one up or try to cut it into fourths and give the chick a fourth of one daily. That helps!

Keep up the good work and your chick should be walking normally in a day or two!

Thanks for replying! I really appreciate the advice. I'm glad to know I wasn't to far off. I'll definitely look for some B-complex! We took her hobble off for an hour, like you suggest, and she was walking a little better. (Not completely though)
Once again, thank you!

Very welcome!

We got the liquid at Walmart in case that's what you're planning to get. It does work so much easier to give them that than a pill, but either does the trick! Once a day for a few days helps!
