silkie chick with broken leg--update: amputee--am I nuts?

Your baby is so cute !! You did the right thing, so glad you did not put her (?) down. I had hatched my 4 babies and kept them in the house until I put them outside when they were around 2 mos old. Then the raccoon attack. They had never been separated, so I brought one of them in as a companion for T at the vet. When T was put back in the box with G, she was still sleepy and G tapped her like "hey, wake up" and she did. It was so sweet. I brought all of them back inside while my husband made a new coop. T and G stayed inside while T healed. I think I kept them inside for 3 weeks. Then I put them outside in the new coop with the other two. It took T a little time to get used to being back outside (it was very hot, plus there was a lot more room out there) but now it is hard to pick out which one is her when she is standing with the others. G is always at her side, and will scratch the ground for her to peck at things and to dust bathe. I have actually watched G scratch the ground, do the fluffing dust bathing thing, and then nudge T to the same spot so she can dust bathe. I will try to post a couple of pix.

Amazing! I don't have any of the other chicks with her; I am thinking I will have to try to bond her with the calmest of her siblings. Isn't it amazing how they have the capacity to care for one another?? Come to think of it, when found her hurt it was in a very large run area,-- only one of her hatchmates was laying tucked up very close against her, clearly keeping watch over her downed sibling....
Qi Chicken , I really like the name "Cricket"! and crickets hop so it's appropriate but cute.---or "crazy train" haha kidding! I'll see what the family says...

OK, if the rest of you with amputees post your pics; then I promise to keep posting updates and pics on her progress

Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is so exciting! GOOOO Cricket!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's amazing really though isn't it. Huge surgery and already she is learning to get around. I really thought it would take her longer.

And yes, I was trying to think of things that hop.... And she just looks like a Cricket! Congrats to your girl

Nature finds a way! The day after I first read this post I happened upon a small wild bird out in the yard. It was scuttling around in the leaves at the base of a tree near my coop. It sat there watching me as I watched it. Thinking maybe something was wrong, I approached it and it ran around the tree, under leaves and twigs... it moved very fast, I couldnt catch it, but it didnt fly. I thought maybe it had an injured wing and made one last attempt to scoop it up, but again it moved quickly around the tree like it was swimming in the leaves. This little bird leaned over to one side long enough for me to see thet it hand NO LEGS at all!! It flopped back onto it's belly, pushed it's self into a few quick hops using it's belly and wings and it flew off to land in the branches of a pine tree! I thought of this post immediatly. I have seen wild birds w/only one leg before but never no legs. My point is, this little bird was using only his wings to move about on the ground, and so fast that I couldn't catch him!

You are doing a great thing. Good luck.
