Silkie chicken flipped over

How often and much should I be giving the goat paste? I've been giving her a pea sized amount and she seems to respond quickly to it. She turns her neck straight and eats a bit and drinks water after I give it to her then she goes back to the laying down position with her neck back. I'm wondering if I'm not giving enough or often enough.

Dosing should be on the tube. At 7 months of age, she should be about 2 to 2.5 lbs. Determine her weight and give the amount of paste (by weight) to her at least once per day. If she's not responding, give it to her twice per day. We treated a 12 week-old Silkie pullet that weighed about 1 to 1.5 lbs with two 2 gram dosages per day, and sometimes three dosages per day. Her symptoms did not abate until 6 weeks into treatment - it can be a long process :-(

Add the B-Complex vitamins too. Use a human B-complex tablet and cut it into fourths (1/4 of a tablet), crush it to powder and mix with a moist paste of feed to administer. Do this ONCE per day. Ours like Yogurt added for the flavor, and it makes them readily take the vitamins. Other vitamin products that are a source of B include Poulty Nutri Drench and Poly-Vi-Sol (WITHOUT Iron) for human babies...

Thank you for this! So I should be giving her more than a pea sized amount. Thank you! I'll get some b complex as well. Can I ask what symptoms your chicken had and how they improved or looked during recovery?

It's best to weigh the dosage since it's measured that way on the product packaging. A pea-sized amount (approximately the size of a #2 pencil eraser) will yield about .75g if I remember correctly.

A 2g dosage was about the size of 1/4 TSP - seems like a lot, but that's what we mixed into her feed. Weigh it though; my memory is NOT what it used to be and I don't have the product on hand right now. For what it's worth, we weighed the product on an old drug compounding scale - you can get a little digital scale at places like Walmart and hardware stores if I'm not mistaken...

Here is a link to her progress with photos, some showing her head completely twisted down, nearly between her legs and nearly on the ground. There were days when she'd drag one side of her head through the dirt, trying to get her bearings and balance. It was heart-breaking to watch, but we stuck with the treatments and she came through it.....

Here's a photo of her from about a week ago with her sister; she's the cream colored bird:

O wow. So amazing! I'm so happy for you and your silkie! My chickens neck looks kind of like an owl with it twisted behind her head. It never has hung between her legs though. Always above and twisted. When I gave the medicine this morning she tried to get up and ate and drank for a minute or so then laid back down in the twisted position. Her eating an drinking on her own was improvement from yesterday when I had to feed her out of my hand.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to give a quick update, after about ready to give up on the chicken (I hate to admit); as of yesterday she started to stand and take a few steps! As of today she is completely off her side and standing all day on her own and walking around. I know she's not 100% but I'm so glad to see some progress 😊! Thank you for all of your help. I continued with the goat paste and vitamin b. She is a little trooper and is amazing us!

To me, sounds more like a brain injury then anything else. If she's Vaulted skulled then, they're more fragile.

I've only had one case of vitamin deficiency with one silkie in all my 4 years of raising them.

Stick with the treatment. Wry Neck can sometimes take a LONG time to correct.

I'm so glad to hear that she's standing and walking! It really is satisfying when it pays off... :) We continued with the therapeutics about a week to ten days after we felt we were passed the symptoms just to be sure...

Thank you for this! I will continue the treatment and hope she keeps on improving!
