Silkie Color Genetics

I was looking at Ideal's website. And for their blue silkies it says that you can get blue, black or splash. So what are the genetics behind those colors. Will blacks and splashes also throw blues? What about the whites? And the lavanders? Haha! So many questions.

While I'm at it, are beards dominant?

This is what I found on the BBS and Lavender...

Basic Colors

Blue/Black/Splash (BBS)

Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash

Blue x Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash

Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

Black x Splash = 100% Blue

Black x Black = 100% Black

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

NOTES - - Black can NEVER parent a Splash Bird, and Splash can NEVER parent a Black Bird.

Lavender

Lavender (Self Blue) x Lavender (Self Blue) = 100% Lavender (Self Blue)

Lavender (Self Blue) x Black = 100% Split (Visually Black, with Lavender gene hidden)

Split x Split = 25% Lavender (Self Blue), 50% Split, 25% Black

Lavender (Self Blue) x Split = 50% Lavender (Self Blue), 50% Split
Split x Black = 50% Split, 50% Black



Have no Idea about beards I'll be watching this for that answer...

To add to the above, white turns OFF the expression of all other colour and pattern genes present in the bird. Therefore no two whites are likely to be the same genetic variety underneath that switch, and cannot be predictably bred to other varieties.

Bearded is incompletely dominant, meaning that one copy of the gene will produce a partially beared bird, versus two copies which will produce a fully beared bird. The amount of expression varies, and should be selected for.

Lavender is an entirely different gene to blue. Blue (often called Andalusian Blue) & lavender are dilutions.​

Yep, lavender's a completely different gene. It is a recessive gene, so a bird must possess two copies for it to be visible. Blue is incompletely dominant, so with one copy of the gene, the bird is blue. If a bird has two copies of the blue gene, it is a splash.
