I have 7 month old silkies hens and roosters as well as 2 Wynadotte and 2 Buff Braham hens. I fed my silkies Nutrena silkie chick food when babies but when I switched to layer pellets(Nutrena) specifically for the silkies they refused to eat. I switched to Harvest blend and meat bird crumbles. I feed to all. They love both but ignore pellets in Harvest Blend. Their eggs are fine and are laying daily. Just wanted to be certain I won't face issues later. I would prefer to give them an organic high protein food but not familiar with any . Any suggestions appreciated!!!

Considering you have a roo you shouldn't be feeding layer anyways as he doesn't need the extra calcium. I'd also be careful with organic especially with silkies as many organic feeds tend to have the bare minimum (and sometimes even less) of certain nutrients, namely methionine and lysine and silkies are particularly prone to vitamin deficiencies. Not all organic feeds have this problem, but many do so pay close attention to the label

Adult chickens can eat chick food too. So if you want, you can just go back to the same feed you used when they were chicks.

The only special thing about layer feed is the amount of calcium: about three times as much as what chick feeds have. Hens that are laying eggs do need extra calcium to make eggshells. Roosters and non-laying hens do not need the extra calcium.

You can put out a dish of oyster shell as a calcium source. That is a common way to deal with a mixed flock: feed something suitable for them all, and provide calcium separately so the layers can get it when they need it. Most chickens are good eat eating the right amount of calcium for their own needs, when they have a dish of it available.

Our silkies didn't do so well with pellets, even the small ones, so I stick with crumbles.

We often have baby chicks here, teenagers, and adults, including many hens and roosters, as well as a few ducks. For several years, they've all been on Kalmbach's Flock Maker crumbles. That does come in an organic version if you wish. Even if I wanted to go organic, we can't, as we're surrounded by farmers' fields.

This is 20% protein, but lower calcium, so I have dishes of oyster shell where the adult chickens are.

Treats are Kalmbach's Henhouse Reserve, available in an organic version. They get scrambled eggs about twice a month. Otherwise, I keep treats form anything else to a rare occasion, since they need to get their nutrients from their feed. They love kale, which is highly nutritious, so we grow it for them in the summer.

I mix a small amount of Rooster Booster into the feed monthly for a boost, but avoid using it daily with chicks, as it causes diarrhea.

Since silkies are more prone to vitamin deficiencies, we take proactive steps to prevent them. We'll still have an occasional problem, so other vitamin supplements we have on hand for individual cases are Poultry Cell and Nutri-Drench, as well as a few individual vitamin/mineral treatments.
