Hey all! I obtained these 2 from a local breeder, unsure about sex on either (wasn’t a huge concern for me because at this time they’re the only chickens here) but figured I would start my thread now and see what you peeps think! They’re around 3-4 weeks now, I think. Not sure on their hatch date. I’ll update as they age and see what happens. :p
Don’t mind the clutter behind them, we’re rearranging rooms and what a disaster!! Haha.

Custard (who may wind up renamed as Chocobo):

Krispies (so named because this one had a ruptured air sac and made funky Rice Krispies sounds while breathing):

There definitely silkies
It was supposed to be one of each but yeah, they look extremely similar. Haha. They both have slightly frizzled feathers coming in, too. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The partridge looking one has a single comb, however. Chickens are not my forte (I’m a waterfowl person haha) so this is all new to me. 😝
I just got my first set of silkies too! I was looking for some grow out threads- so you have pictures of them younger?
I only have from the day I got them, around a week and a half, two weeks. But they’re growing crests like you wouldn’t believe since then!

Pure silkie have a walnut comb, not a single. Could there have been an accidental fence hopper at the place you got them from? Either way, silkie are notoriously difficult to sex. I agree with posting more pictures in 12 weeks. They both are adorable by the way!

just looked at the newer pics the lighter one dose appear to be a frizzle
The way I can tell though it’s silkies are black skin black bones etc. and the dark has a dark beak vs the other

I’m wondering if these were a mixed silkie/frizzle pen, actually. I’m not sure, the breeder has a ton of birds so anything’s possible. Haha. I’ll try to get better pics of their combs at our next photo shoot too; the partridge looking one has all 5 toes, the lighter one has nubbins that are about half the length of regular toes without any nails, which leads me to believe they’re both crosses. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The comb looks right on the light one, it’s very flat, practically nonexistent, but the darker one definitely has a very obvious single comb. I can’t wait to see how they develop and thanks to all of you for sharing in this with me! 😁

An update because they’re too cute. Haha. I think they’re around 5.5 weeks now. They aren’t using the heat source (MHP) hardly at all anymore, and the room they’re in is around 64-66 F. (I know, it’s still too early to sex them, but hey. xD)
