Update! Nugget no longer has his episodes! Every once in awhile if he stresses about something he falls over but he gets right back up. He picks on the bunny now so I can't put them in together anymore. Ty u all for all ur great support. I don't know what I would have done without you!

This is great news!!! I am so glad he has improved so much. HE couldn't have done it without YOU!!

Good news is always welcome. I can't think of a new members thread that has more responses - Nugget, has quite a fan club, he just burrowed into our hearts.

Well Nugget is still with me and he has gotten louder! About a week ago I forgot to lock him up at night. He woke me up at 6am with his crowing. I quickly got up and put him away before he woke up the entire nieghborhood. The people of my nieghborhood have started figuring out where the crowing is coming from. Some have stopped and said that they like hearing him. I think they are just being nice or live far enough down the street that he doesn't wake them up. But everyone who has actually came over and took the time to interact with Nugget has fallen in love. But, no one seems to have what is necessary to keep him. There was one woman (friend if a friend kinda thing) who really wants him but she has 2 large roosters running free and no coop to keep Nugget safe. There is one woman who baby's her animals and has spent a large sum of money having a predator proof/resistant setup for her hens. She wants Nugget but she's afraid her hens with pick on him. Plus she doesn't really want fertilized eggs. But I think she'd build a special place just for him on her front lawn. I know I'm being super picky about a potential home for him but he's special and has special needs.

Oh how great that Nugget is doing so well!! I knew you were the right person to care for him and get him back to good health.

I think you are doing very well in being picky on finding him a new home. Chickens can often be mistreated or neglect. Owners are not always attentive enough and the birds either die from some disease or kill each other. Especially roosters. Many of them end up in stew pots eventually.

So you SHOULD be picky!! Don't let him go until you are 100% sure he is going to a good forever home!

The right home is out there for him. You could always chat with your chicken neighbors in your state thread here on BYC or place an ad in our Buy Sell and Trade section too.

Speaking of chickens in questionable homes... my husband and I were driving down a back road and saw a tiny chick in the road. There was a couple of small sheds and an abandoned mobile home right there. We pulled over to try and catch it but when we got out of the car it was gone. In our search to find it I heard roosters coming from one of the sheds. I peeked in there and there was lines of cages. I couldn't see into the cages but there were a couple of roosters loose in there. There was no doors just a 2 1/2' blockage so they could easily get out if they wanted to.
I saw buckets of water. I wanted to go all the way in but my husband was worried about us getting in trouble for trespassing. There were no houses visible except for up the street on the opposite side. If those were their chickens I wonder why they had them so far away. The house was on quite a bit of acreage.

when I was younger, I went to visit my aunt in South Carolina. They had like 5 chickens and two roosters were in small cages, like 2x2x1.5. I asked why they were in the cages and was given the answer that they had to be kept that way. It was that day that kept me from ever considering chickens because if they had to be kept that way, I didn't want to keep them.

So thankful chicken life doesn't have to be that way!

Yesterday good ol Nugget found a forever home. A friend of ours saw an ad in the paper for someone wanting to buy a silkie rooster. Apparently this guy had renters who let their dog out into the chicken run and the dog killed his old rooster. He said his 16 bantam hens had surrounded the dying rooster protecting him from any further harm. From what my husband has told me, this man spoils his chickens alternating between white, wheat, and whole grain bread; fruits and veggies; along with the flock raiser. The chicken run is approx 100'x120'. He had my husband go over how to trim his eye fuzz and how often and all the extra care he needs. He kept asking "are you sure you don't want anything for him?" In return my husband replied "My wife will just be happy he's going to a good home." He actually came by my work before calling this man to clear it with me first. I wanted to go with to meet him during my lunch break but I think my husband was afraid that I'd start crying. I hear the Phantom crowing still; I must miss him. I'm so glad I was stubborn and waited til we found the right person.
