Silkie Health concerns

Awesome ty. I cut some carpet to fit in a large kennel. It's the only things he can walk on besides short grass. He slips on newspaper and trips if I use a towel. He's such a silly bird.

I can't wait to get him on the right vitamins. Also I'm going to get some wormer just in case. His right leg is also starting to splay out. I'm hoping the vitamins will fix that.

You mentioned using news paper. This is horrible for chicken legs. They slip on it and can cause sprains, strains and splay leg. So keep him on grippy surfaces or bedding at all times. :-)

Yeah I cut some carpet for him. So he doesn't trip or slip anymore. But he still keeps falling over. He spazes and flips himself over on his back. He's on the right vitamins now along with the Sav-A-Chick. And I wormed him yesterday. I also got in a baby white Dutch bunny last night. I'm kinda curious as to if they'd get along.

Sounds like you are doing all you can do for him. Some birds just do have problems, either from genetic reasons or issues they contracted during life sometime. Just keep working with him and hopefully he turns the corner soon.

I don't know if I mentioned this earlier or not, but you might try some apple cider vinegar in his water. 3/4 teaspoon per quart waterer, plastic or glass waterer only. Change this and make new each day. I had a quail with West Nile Virus that I was able to help with the use of apple cider vinegar. It seem to help with brain swelling. ACV is known to reduce inflammation. And your Nugget could have some sort of brain issue going on what with the balance problems and flipping over. Use this for a couple weeks. You know what else helps?? Infra-red heat lamps. Infra-red is a healing light. I know it is a bit warm now for heat, but you might try letting him stand in it for 15 mins 2 times a day. I use this spectrum lighting in all hospital cages with great success. It improves circulation, penetrates into the bones, it helps with arthritis and just might help with this situation in some way. I use Infra-red for everything. LOL But it seems to help. At this point, you need to try anything.

You are really taking good care of him! :-)

Woohoo Thank you. I have some apple cider vinegar. And I'm sure I can find an infared light in some of our reptile supplies. Yeah, my husband was watching Nugget spaz and fall over like he was having a seizure almost. It never lasts long, but my husband is trying to think maybe we should put him down. He doesn't seem in pain to me. But mentally I think the little guy is getting worse. I will try that apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning and track down the light. It's cool enough at night that I had a heat pad under his kennel so I could always turn the light on at night. Tomorrow I have the day off of work so I'll have plenty of time to pamper him and the bunny. Of course now I have a baby squirrel in as well. Would it help if I took a video and sent it to you of Nugget's episodes?

Ok I've got him under a 250 watt infared lamp on a nice size piece of outdoor carpet. He's loose on the clinic floor so he can move away if he gets to warm. It's still pretty cool outside so I think he'll be ok. If he chooses to stay under the light all day is that ok? I set up his water with the ACV. He doesn't seem to mind the flavor at all. I haven't seen him spaz yet this morning, but he's wobbly when trying to stand up to walk. I find it odd that if I can get him to run... He runs just fine... no wobbling or anything. I haven't tried to get him to run in a few days for fear of not knowing what kind of effect the exertion would have if it is a brain injury.

Nugget's spazing seems to be getting worse. He's not righting himself after he falls over as frequently. Should I be patient or end his suffering?

I am so sorry about Nugget. Only you can make this decision, but if he is clearly suffering and does not appear to be able to live a normal life, then it might be time to put him down.

I am so so sorry. You did all you could and more for this bird. More than most people might have done.
