I have two silkie hens, one of which is around 6 months old. She started laying around 3 weeks ago and so far has only missed one or two days laying so far. I've read everywhere that silkies are quiet poor layers only producing 3 or so eggs a week so I'm slightly concerned even if it sounds weird that she is laying too much. Today she laid an egg this morning but this afternoon has gone back into her coop as if she's going to lay again. Is this normal for a young hen? I am a first-time chicken owner
Other info for context:
- She was on growing pellet up until a week after she started laying as I didn't have a substitute and my other hen is younger than 6 months who is not laying.
- She is now on a high protein laying feed (could this be the problem? she was laying a lot before this too though. Should I take her off this either way?)
- 3 days ago she was stressed out by an animal and laid a shell-less egg
- Both chickens are free-range
