Hello all!
It's been awhile since I've been on here, but I know this is the place to go for help!
My one hen, approx 2 yr old silkie, has been having clear bubbles in the corners of her eyes. It started about a month ago and she had alittle nasal discharge. With the crazy weather I thought just a cold and after having her inside for a few days all seemed clear. Then a couple days ago the eye bubbles started again and she just seemed off. I brought her in 2 nights ago and started applying Vet RX ,putting ACV in her water and making sure she's been eating. She's perky, eating ok but bubbles still in one eye. I googled her symptoms and Mycoplasma did come up as a possibility. Mycoplasma seems to have more symptoms than just the eyes so I don't know what to do! I was about to order some Doxy for her but I figured I'd wait until I talked to y'all! Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! THANK YOU!!!

I'll do some research and get back to you. We need a chicken vet.
Thank you! I had never heard of Mycoplasma until I googled bubbles in the corners of her eyes. She didnt have any antibiotics the first time I noticed and none yet this time. I just don't know what to do. Ugh

Go to Merch Manual Vet Manual or the University of Maryland Extension web site. If she has lesions, I would say what you think it is, but you might find your answer there. Or call the Colorado Vet from that show on Animal Planet

Thank you I will do that! Wish Dr. Jeff was closer!

Looks like she has a fairly thick discharge coming from they eye.
Flush it with saline and apply some Terramycin eye ointment in the eye. Do this 2-3times a day.
If she does not improve, seek vet care or you can try antibiotics to see if those make a difference. Tylan50 injectable can be found at Tractor Supply. Dosage is .25ml per pound of weight given orally 3 times a day for 5 days.

It's hard to know the cause of the infection. Mycoplasma would be a good guess since there's bubbles. Respiratory diseases can present in different ways just like everything else. It may not be a respiratory disease - infection from E.Coli or getting debris in the eye, molds and poor ventilation are some other causes of infections that chickens can get.

Tylan 50 injectable from the feed store is about the only medication that will treat MG. It can be given orally after removing the needle from the syringe. Dosage is 0.25 ml per pound of weight given 3 times daily for 5 days. The symptoms sound similar to what she has, although you could get her tested by an NPIP inspector or vet.

Doxycycline, Denagard, and Baytril(enrofloxacin) available online will all treat MG symptoms. MG is a chronic respiratory disease, and it makes carriers for life. There are several strains of MG, and symptoms can be mild sometimes, or more severe if there are other diseases as secondary infections, for example infectious bronchitis, ILT, or coryza. Many times there can be a couple at once. Here is a good link with symptoms of all of those:

Thank you so much for all this info! I've been hot packing her eye, but now I'll do the saline and eye ointment! If that doesn't work we'll move on to the antibiotic. I live in PA and this winter had been crazy which has brought about alot of mold etc. I also have a rat problem that I'm currently attacking. Luckily, knock on wood, my other 4 hens, roo and goose have been great. Thank you again for your help!!! I'll keep you posted!:frow

Thank you for all this info! There are sooo many things chickens can get and it can be so overwhelming! Then trying to get antibiotics has become so hard, spent so much time googling and trying to find a place to get what she may need! :he So frustrating! I did NOT know you could give the injectable orally, that makes things so much easier! I know tractor supply has the ink! Thank you so much! I'll keep y'all posted! :fl
