Chicken Addict
In the last 7 days I have had much silkie drama. I have only kept the breed since April 2019.
Deaths and unexpected births. Does anyone else experience this with this breed? I am starting to think they just need confined to their run and not be allowed to free range.
It started with a neighbor dog finding a broody outside the wire. We got her back safe and sound plus 7 unexpected chicks. A hurricane hit and today one was either brooding inside my car or who knows but apparently sliced open by something in the engine area. I am thinking of selling them off now on craigslist if only I could trust my wife not to off me in my sleep about it. Oh well I hatched out those eggs so it is my problem now. We really enjoy them as they are so personable for chicken. They are for sure high maintenance. I can probably meet my wife halfway and get rid of our current roosters.
I am not trying to malign the breed in any way but I find them a real handful. They want to be treated like real chicken and allowed out of their run to free range. Then they go and get creative in their ways to die. My only other breed to keep are my Sumatra and they never have these issues. Sumatra are straightforward about dying if they go outside the wire it is dogs. For Sumatra Hawks just bounce off them, or slam into the house, they are bulletproof in relation to predation.
