Silkie & (maybe) Serama Hatch-A-Long

The Serama eggs finally arrived today!! :celebrate

How long do you think should I rest them ?
I could wait till tomorrow morning but the hatches would be even more staggered and I'm not sure if I should do that...do you think its enough if I wait till tonight..as in about 3-4h...?

I also just checked on the air pockets and one of them seems to have little bubbles around it...should I put that egg in, even if it doesn't settle properly?

Depends on how long they were in transit.
Eggs might become detached, saddled, or a little shaken up from a long journey. That full day gives them time to rest and reattach.

That being said, I’ve never done staggered hatches, and I’m not too sure how well that would work in a single incubator.

Every single egg I’ve candled that has a bubbly air cell has not hatched.
Hatching eggs as you know should be stored pointy side down.

Debbie is very much an expert in all things hatching, so she will be able to give much better advice here.
I do not, for example, know whether a staggered hatch in the same incubator would be more detrimental than not resting shipped eggs for a good amount of time

Yeah ok, thanks for the help!!

I do have another small incubator I could probably put the Silkies in for lockdown... probably wouldn't be a big issue..

Thing is that Serama normally hatch day 18-19...if I put them in tomorrow they should be at day 16 when I put the silkies in lockdown...is that to early for the Serama then ?

I’ve never had a serama hatch earlier than my rest, but I’ve heard people saying it can happen:idunno.
I doubt it’s that drastic though.

With that in mind, I’ll say yes.
If you have the spare, I would choose to use it. It would also give you the opportunity to properly rest the shipped eggs

I went by the advice of those who shipped me eggs, and they all said either 12 to 24 hours, sitting in an egg cartons small end down, in room temp.

I would stagger them by at least 4 days, preferably 5. That way, while your currently incubated ones are hatching and drying out, you can take them out when they're done hatching and not risk shrink-wrapping any newer ones.

I don't think seramas hatch sooner than silkies do they?
I looked it up and it sounds like they are similar to silkies or other bantams in that they can hatch in 19 days. This is why I do a 5-day lockdown as I've had one silkie hatch in 18 days, several in 19 days and the vast majority 20-21.

How many days does it take for the silkies?

Here everyone hatches at the same time :idunno .
I’m not sure I believe that a specific breed has a whole different hatch date
I just replied below you lol. 18 (rare) to 21 days.
