Silkie & (maybe) Serama Hatch-A-Long

I was just wondering how is best to candle...

I used to leave the eggs in the incubator while it was open and quickly went through and candled each one...

But recently I've seen that many put them into egg cartons and even take them into a different room.

I'm guessing that is to keep the machine stable ?

What is best ?
If you can do it at night, then the way you do it is great. I'd only haul them in egg cartons to another room if you couldn't wait and another room is dark. I just worry the more I carry them around, more chance of an accident. I'm a clutz! I just wait and candle at night and do it right from the incubator.

I have my incubator in the basement, so its pitch black if I turn off the lights, so I just sit next to the incubator and take them out 1 by 1, keeping the lid closed in between replacing and taking out a new. I dont have to carry them and they are always close over a surface. The incubator mostly keeps temp that way. But then.... this is my first time and they have just now reached lock down so idk! 😆

Currently Day 9 for the Silkies and Day 7 for the Serama..

Last candled two days ago and had six Silkies developing, but couldn't see a lot going on with the Sermas....(Hoping it was just too early to see :fl )

I'll probably only get to candling again next week due to grandparents having come over for a few days...but might be able to sneak in a short Session sometime :D😄

I've been called a 'serial candler' by @Sefirothe so I get it. My solution was to hatch multiple batches back to back

 I have also been known to candle A LOT!

I wouldn't be able to do staggered hatches...well, actually... I'll still have the incubator I lent from my cousin and my own 🤔🤣

No, I won't even think of it...!
Space, time etc...........
But If I have a broody in a few weeks..I don't think I'll be able to resist 😭😂

I don't candle unless moving eggs around, because I stagger lol. I have three incubators, the third one is the only one that gets regular cleaning as it's for lockdown/hatching.

Everytime I see one of my girls on the nestbox I get excited. So far only one went broody at 6 months and raised 3 chicks.

Right now, though, I think my head would explode if even one went broody, lol.
