My birds came from my sister. She told me they were silkies. From the first chicks I got one rooster. His name was Moe. Moe gave me two roosters. The one that I still have is Larry. "Lucky Larry"
Moe and Larry have red comb and waddles. I have been reading that silkies have black comb and waddles.
I have a picture of the first ones.

I think they are four or five weeks old here.

This is Curly. She is sister of Moe.

Moe looking over his girls.
Easter 2021 we hatched chicks. I got Lucky Larry and Cinnamon(I don't think I have pictures of Cinnamon. He looked smooth and was colored around head a beautiful reddish brown.)

This is Lucky Larry. He is lucky because he has survived one coon and two hawk attacks. Right now Larry is a hot mess. The girls pick him. I am hoping he is molting and doesn't have mites or lice.
My query is about their red comb and waddles. Are they not quite real silkies? What else could they be mixed with?
Thanks for looking.

Sometimes parts don't get an even distribution of the Fibromelanosis gene, that turns the whole bird black, especially in the face of some cocks.

These two have fully black body skin, just red faces.

Here's my best breeder, he's mulberry in the face.

Just a note: These I posted aren't Bantams.

Your birds appear to be mixes. Looks like you have some frizzle genetics at play here. These are introduced with frizzled Cochins usually and they have red combs and wattles, so likely this is where the coloring is coming from. It’s very important that you do not breed two frizzles together as you can produce a frazzle. I know this is a funny word but that’s what it’s really called. These are very unhealthy birds with missing and broken feathers and also other health issues.🙂

Yes, I agree some are mixed, primarily the frizzled ones.

I am pretty sure they are not "pure". They are batams. I don't intend to hatch anymore chicks from this batch. I have new eggs from ebay under Blue eared Betty. I'm hoping for a easter hatch.
I worry that Larry is a frazzle. How do you know? My sister has a mixed flock. And I don't think she keeps track.

Frazzles have very brittle feathers.
