Silkie moms letting babies die-why?

I am SO distraught!!! our hand raised silkie finally hatched her very first baby, then the following afternoon the baby had been hurt badly. she or another mom had gutted the baby. would the mom hen do this? we put a large kennel around her just in case it was another hen. but now we dony know what to do. any ideas?
