Silkie nesting boxes

Is it okay to have nesting boxes inside the run but outside of the coop? I was hoping to have a nesting box area inside the run but not in the coop so I would have easier access to the nesting boxes but looking for advice first.
 
Sure you can, they're more typically in coops because most coops are better climate/predator protected so in turn that keeps nest boxes dry and clear of egg eaters. But as long as you have a way of keeping the nest area protected the chickens themselves don't care if they're inside or outside of a coop.
 
I thought I posted this somewhere on BYC but can't locate it so hope it's ok to add here...
Since silkies cannot fly,do their nesting boxes need to be ground level? Or out a ramp to go up to the nesting boxes others in flock are using at regular heights?
