My sweet little silkie, Rue, won't go into the coop.

Last week I had a "city friend" and her children over....and her 4 year old little girl trapped her under a metal bowl that was in the coop on "time out".....well, 5 hours later in 98* weather, I found her still under the bowl. Thankfully, she was okay. Hungry and dehydrated and drenched in wetness, but alive. I brought her in the house, bathed her (surprisingly she seemed to like it??) and kept her in a laundry basket with water, food and yogurt. Late that night I put her right into the coop.

Since then, she has been hanging out at the patio door, coming when you call her, and just generally wanting to be around us and not her chicken friends. The "big girls" (that are a month older) have been picking on her and another white pullet silkie the last couple of days too.

Well, this morning my daughter went out to let the chickens out. My husband closed them up last night (and didn't count them like I do). Madelyn came in to tell me that Rue was not in the coop.

This evening we did not get home until about a half an hour after dark. I went to lock them up....and we were missing Rue again. In panic mode we searched all over for her and after calling her we found her right next the coop door.

Why isn't she going into the coop at night? Are the others being that mean to her? Is she afraid? What is the deal???

I have a silkie who usually doesn't go in by himself either. I've put it down to he can't see very well, and I have clippers that I plan to use tomorrow to trim his crest. I think in my case he just can't see well enough to navigate the door so prefers to stay outside. My other silkie will go in about half the time and the rest of the time stays out with his brother. Perhaps yours is a vision issue as well?

Yep, that's about like mine
