Silkie Plumage Question (im a newbie silkie owner)

Your right on about the personality...."it" is the first one to the door when I open it and loves to be held.....so no matter what I already love him/her and wouldnt change a thing.....however now I understand the differences between the different qualities and what im aiming towards

The coloration and pattern. Males will typically be more reddish and have a male pattern. Females are more of a straw color and have a different pattern.

Penciled, as in a tan feather with black markings on it? Is that specifically a female Silkie thing? Also could you explain male patterning a little more?
