This isn't a need-to-know question & it's not going to change anything, I'm just really curious... Sonoran Silkies might know the answer to this... Someone else might too.
My 4 silkie pullets have comb differences & yes, they're all purebred. The oldest, largest & dominant female -6 mo, has a comb that is hidden under her crest but is like two smooth hills.
She is black. The others, white buff & blue-splash, all have no comb, meaning flat, and covered with short down. All these have somewhat vaulted skulls, whereas the dominant pullet does not.
The others are 4.5 mo old, and not laying yet. All but one used to have little naked pre-walnut combs, but they have shrunk to nothing.
Will the other pullets develop combs as they mature, or will they stay flat & downy? Is that part of not being the dominant female?
