The crowing is no longer the only thing that makes my question of gender no longer much of a question.
Silky (I know, not terribly original for a name yet he now responds to it and knows we are talking about him when we say it) is now leading them to the coop at night fall, in and out to check that all of the hens have followed before going up into the coop himself.
He isn’t fluttering around with the rest of the flock looking for bugs and worms when ranging, he’s standing apart and watching over them, picking up his own food at his leisure while keeping a guard. And when he retires to the shady yard corner for a nap during the hottest part of our Texas days, the other five all follow and crowd around him.
Acts like a roo, too, it seems from all I’ve read. This is our first time with chickens, so it’s fun yet more demanding than I thought (I’m good with that though), a a lot of guesswork and reading.
