Hi everyone!

I live in the city, and while we are allowed to keep roos, I would think they'd be a little too loud. I'm hoping to hatch some Silkie eggs, so I was wondering if a Silkie roo is as loud as a regular breed roo? Can I expect him to wake up the neighbors? I'd love to keep a couple females and one roo, but just not sure about the noise level.
As a side note...I really shouldn't be worrying about it, the people behind me have a Cockatoo that they put on the patio in the evening that SCREAMS for hours, with no consideration from the owners. But I'm not that disrespectful...I consider my neighbors.

I have 3 silkie roos(Mr. Woo, Julep, Gypsy) in my house at the moment until my chicken barn is done. They do crow but mostly in response to the outside boys. They are not as loud as my ameraucana, sebright, or japanese. They are by far the sweetest and cuddliest of my roos. You've not been loved until you have been loved by a silkie roo.

We're getting some silkies this spring... and you're so right about the japanese! They never shut up, and seem to get the other roosters going!

Thanks everyone. I think even with a small amount or lower volume crowing..I'm better off not having a roo. Our houses are side by side, so no doubt it would disturb someone.

I got two Mihalik Silkies, which he sexed and assured me where hens. They both turned out to be very sweet, but very loud roos. I hoped fervently that becasue they where so different and small they wouldn't be too bad. It didn't work-they crowed loudly and constantly.

I ,too, am in the city and didn't want my neighbours to hate my guts. I had to find a home for them ...

(but thank god for BYC and a wonderful fellow member who has not only given them a great home, but is going to breed them this spring and give me another chance at having some little silkie girls!!!!Thank you!!!!)

Hi whytedragon,

My Silkie boys were the best! They never made a "peep" when I had my other Frizzle roo at home but I had to rehome him and as soon as they knew my Frizzle was gone, they started crowing.....constantly!! They are not as loud as my other rooster but they are more frequent!

and my black silkie boy has a horrible crow...like someone dying...

Well since I'd love to get some fertile eggs from them, what do you think about me taking my girls (hoping to hatch some) over to visit some males during breeding season, and then I incubate the eggs? Can roos be studded? lol
